How to extract files in Windows 98/Me/2000/XP

  • In most cases, you will need the original Windows installation CD or have the installation files on the hard drive.

STEP 1
  Print this page

We suggest that you print this page before you start.

Expand each section by clicking the "+" before you actually print. PRINT

Because you must return to this page after you restart the computer, add this page to Favorites.

STEP 2
  Click one of the following, depending on your operating system
I use Windows 98
NOTE Note You must use an original Windows 98 CD or the install files on your hard disk to use SFC to restore your file.

Click Start > Run.

In Run the dialog box, type the following text:
sfc

Click OK.

When the System File Checker dialog box appears, check Extract one file from Installation disk.

Click Start.

Type the following text in the Restore from field:
 
d:\win98
 You may need to modify this location if the D drive is not your CD ROM drive.

 Type the following text in the Save file in field:
d:\windows\system
 The location where the file is saved varies depending on which file you want to restore.

 Click OK.

When prompted to create a backup of the file, note the location of the Backup folder and click OK.

When you see the message "The file has been successfully extracted", click OK.

Restart your computer.
I use Windows Me 
1
Click Start > Run.

In the Run dialog box, type the following text, and then click OK.
msconfig

Click the Startup tab and uncheck *StateMgr.

Click Apply > OK.

Restart the computer when prompted.

After restarting the computer, click Start > Run.

In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
msconfig

Click OK.

Click Extract File.

Type the name of the file that you want to extract in the box "Specify the system file you would like to restore".

Click Start.

In the "Restore from" box, type te following text:
c:\windows\options\install\cab

Type the following for the "Save file in" box:
c:\windows\system

Click OK.
 The location where the file is saved will vary depending on which file you want to restore.

When the prompt to create a backup of the file you are extracting appears, note the location of the Backup folder and click OK.

When you then see the message The file has been successfully extracted, click OK.

Click OK.

Restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, follow lines 1 to 5 and check *StateMgr to restore the original settings.
I use Windows XP/2000 
Extract the file using the automated System File Checker

Click StartRun.

In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
sfc /scannow

Click OK.
 The Windows File Protection dialog box appears and a system scan begins. You may have to insert your Windows installation CD.

Follow the prompts.
Extract the file using the File Signature Verification Utility

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.

Click ToolsWindows > File Signature Verification Utility.

Click Start.
 You will be prompted if any altered or corrupt files are found and that may need to be reinstalled from the installation CD or other source.
