Computer continuously reboots after installing pcAnywhere 10.5 under Windows XP

Situation:
After you install pcAnywhere 10.5 under Windows XP, you can no longer boot into Windows because your system continuously reboots.
You also have Check Disk (CHKDSK) set to run on every bootup.

Solution:
To resolve this problem

  1. Download the following file and copy it to a floppy disk to transfer to the affected computer:

    GERNUWA.sys
  2. Reboot the affected computer into Safe mode. Refer to the document How to start Windows XP in Safe mode for further instructions.
  3. Copy the file to the following directory:

    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
  4. When asked if you want to replace the existing file, answer Yes.
  5. Reboot the computer.

The problem should no longer occur.
