Removing Symantec Ghost 8.x Console client after Add/Remove Programs does not work

Question/Issue:
You could not uninstall the Symantec Ghost 8.x Console Client by using Add/Remove Programs. You want to know how to manually uninstall the Symantec Ghost 8.x Console Client from a Microsoft® Windows® NT/2000/XP workstation.


Solution:
To manually remove the Symantec Ghost 8.x Console client from Windows NT/2000/XP workstation, perform the following four steps:



WARNING: Symantec strongly recommends that you back up the Windows registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the registry keys that are specified. For more information about backing up the Windows registry, see the document Backing up the Windows Registry before proceeding.


To stop and uninstall the Ghost Client Agent service
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  2. Type the following text:

    c:\program files\symantec\ghost\ngctw32.exe -uninstall

  3. Click OK.

To delete the Ghost folders and files from the hard drive
  1. On the Windows taskbar, right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. On the View tab, under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders.
  4. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Delete the following files from the specified folders:
    • C:\Gvpcfg.bin
    • C:\Virtpart.dat
    • C:\WINNT\Installer\{2FE11D22-D877-4700-08C1-89A1B9B00045}
    • C:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\GhMon.sys
    • C:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\Ghpcw2k.sys
    • C:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\GhostWmiProvider.dis
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\GhostWmiProvider.dll
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\LnGhostWmiProvider.mof


To modify the GINA registry key
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  2. Type the following text:

    regedit

  3. Click OK.
  4. Navigate to the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

  5. In the right pane, right-click the GinaDLL key.
  6. Click Modify.
    The existing value data is as follows:

    C:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\ginastub.dll

  7. Change the value data to the following:

    C:\WINNT\System32\msgina.dll

    If the path to the Ginastub.dll file is different, then Symantec Ghost 8.x Console Client was installed in a different location. Continue with this step and change the value from the current setting to the Msgina.dll path.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Exit the Registry Editor.


To delete the Ghost registry keys
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  2. Type the following text:

    regedit

  3. Click OK.
  4. Delete the registry keys that are listed below.
    Note that all of these registry keys may not exist on your computer. If a registry key does not exist, continue with the next key.
    If you are using this procedure to enable the Ghost 8.x client installation, delete only the first three keys in the list, and then install the Ghost client. If you cannot install the Ghost client, then you must repeat all of the instructions in this document and delete the following keys.
