Norton SystemWorks 2004 system requirements


Symantec does not provide support for Norton SystemWorks or Norton Password Manager when it is installed on a computer that does not meet the minimum system requirements.

  Minimum system requirements
Norton SystemWorks 2004
Supported operating systems
Norton SystemWorks is supported on each of the following Windows operating systems: 
  • Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE
  • Windows Me
  • Windows 2000 Professional
  • Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition
 Installation of Norton SystemWorks is not supported on Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, Macintosh, Linux, BSD, UNIX, or server versions of Windows 2000/XP.
 If you plan to upgrade your Windows operating system from Windows 98/Me to Windows 2000/XP, you must uninstall Norton SystemWorks before upgrading and then reinstall Norton SystemWorks after the upgrade is complete.
Requirements that depend on the operating system:

Requirements for all installations:  
  • A CD-ROM or DVD drive for software distribution on media
  • Internet Explorer, minimum version 5.01 Service Pack 2 required; 6.0 recommended
  • A Super VGA (800x600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
Additional installation requirements for Norton GoBack Personal Edition: 
  • Additional 200 MB of available hard disk space
  • Approximately ten percent of your total hard disk space for Norton GoBack history (configurable)

 In addition to the operating systems that are supported by Norton SystemWorks, Norton Ghost supports Windows NT, OS/2, and Linux.

Norton Ghost requirements
For disaster recovery using Norton Ghost, you must have one of the following drive types: 
  • Floppy disk drive
  • Writable CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
To use the Norton Ghost backup capability, you must have one of the following devices and appropriate media: 
  • A free local partition
  • A secondary or external hard disk, Zip® drive, or other mass storage device
  • A CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW device (DVD supported formats include +R, +RW, -R, and -RW)
  • Access to a mapped network drive
  • A SCSI or ATAPI (QIC157) tape device
Norton Password Manager 2004
Supported operating systems
Norton Password Manager is supported on each of the following Windows operating systems: 
  • Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE
  • Windows Me
  • Windows 2000 Professional
  • Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition
 Installation of Norton Password Manager is not supported on Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, Macintosh, Linux, BSD, UNIX, or server versions of Windows 2000/XP computers.

Supported email clients
Email scanning is supported for any POP3-compatible and SMTP-compatible email client including: 
  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 4, 5, or 6
  • Microsoft Outlook 97/98/2000/XP
  • Netscape Messenger version 4, Netscape Mail version 6
  • Eudora Light version 3, Eudora Pro version 4, Eudora version 5
  • Pegasus 4
Email clients that are not supported
Norton AntiVirus does not support the following email clients: 
  •  IMAP
  •  AOL
  •  POP3 with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). See the online Help for more information about Secure Sockets Layer connections.
  •  Web-based email such as Hotmail and Yahoo!
  •  Lotus Notes
Email clients that use SSL
 Norton AntiVirus does not support email connections using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). SSL is a Netscape protocol designed to provide secure communications on the Internet. If you use an SSL connection, you are not protected by Norton AntiVirus.
 If you send email messages through SSL connections, Norton AntiVirus might prevent the emails from being sent. To enable email messages through SSL connections, remove Norton AntiVirus scanning from emails.
To send email through an SSL connection:

Open Norton SystemWorks.

Click Options > Norton AntiVirus.

If you have Norton SystemWorks Professional and you set a password for Options, type the password at the prompt.

Click Email > OK.

Clear "Uncheck Scan incoming Email (recommended)."

Clear "Uncheck Scan outgoing Email (recommended)."
Instant messenger programs
The following instant messenger clients are supported: 
  • AOL® Instant Messenger, version 4.7 or later
  • Yahoo!® Instant Messenger, version 5.0 or later
  • MSN® Messenger, versions 4.6 and 4.7
  • Windows® Messenger, version 4.6 or later for Windows XP
Web browsers
Norton Password Manager works with the following Web browsers: 
  • Internet Explorer version 5.01 Service Pack 2 or later
  • America Online 8.0 or later
