How to register and activate Symantec Gateway Security 3.0 (5600 series)

This document is a translation from English. It is possible that updates have been made to the original English version after this document was translated and published. Symantec does not guarantee the accuracy regarding the completeness of the translation.

Symantec Gateway Security 3.0 is shipped with a license that lets the software operate for 30 days. This license begins when you install the product. You must obtain a license file within this 30-day grace period to continue using the product.

Symantec Gateway Security requires one or more license files in order to be fully activated. You need to register your serial numbers to receive a license file.
Each serial number is unique and is usually tied to a specific feature (firewall, content filtering, IDS/IPS, antivirus, and so on) and “size” that applies to that feature.

License files are tied to a specific appliance; they cannot be used on any other appliance. Associate the appropriate serial numbers with the correct Symantec System ID for the intended appliance. For help with this please download the Symantec Gateway Security 5600 Series License Organizer.

Obtaining a license file

Follow the steps in this section to register with Symantec and download a license file.

Information required to register:

  • Symantec Serial Number/s
These are printed on the Symantec Serial Number Certificate.
You can find this in the SGMI by accessing the System folder > Features tab > Installed Licenses > Install button.
  • Appliance Serial number
This is located on a label on the bottom of your unit and also on your shipping carton.
  • Contact details of your technical support contact (Network Administrator)
  • Email address to receive the license file

1. Navigate to the Licensing Portal at http://licensing.symantec.com.
2. Log on to the Licensing Portal.
3. Click License Management.

The License Management application offers a variety of functions that enable flexible management of Symantec Entitlements and related License Keys. This application is used primarily to obtain License Keys. There are three (3) steps to get a License Key:

1. ADD an Entitlement to your portal account
2. REGISTER your Entitlement to get a License Key
3. RECEIVE your License Keys via email

For detailed steps of navigating through the Symantec License Portal, Please click "Help" located in the top right corner of the License Portal log-in screen.

Note: Symantec's licensing tool compresses or "zips" license files to make them smaller and quicker to download. These "zipped" files are not self-extracting, and require third-party software such as WinZip or PKZip to open. If you are unsure whether you need zip utility software, visit the WinZip or PKZip Web sites to download an evaluation copy. For instructions on how to download and unzip files, read the document How to zip and unzip files.

To install the license file(s):
  1. In the SGMI, in the left pane, under System, click Licensing.
  2. In the right pane, on the Installed Licenses tab, click Install.
  3. On the License Installation Wizard welcome panel, click Next.
  4. On the Obtain License Files panel, click Next.
  5. In the Upload License Files panel, to the right of the license file list, click Upload File.
  6. In the Open dialog box, navigate to the location where you saved your license file/s.
  7. Select one or more license files, and then click Open. The license files appear in the License File list.
    • If you inadvertently upload a license file that you do not want to install, select it and click Remove File.
  8. When you have uploaded all of the license files that you want to install, click Next.
  9. In the License Error Check panel, the licenses you have uploaded are checked against other licensed components on your security gateway. Read the messages, and then do the following:
    • If no errors are listed, click Next.
    • If errors are reported, click Back to remove licenses for which you receive errors or warnings, or click Close, and then call Symantec Technical Support for assistance.
    • Note: Since license files can contain multiple licenses, it is possible for the file to contain some licenses that have expired and other licenses that have not. In this situation, you receive a warning. You can install the licenses file and use the features for which the licenses have not expired.
  10. In the Confirm License Installation panel, verify that license files for all the features and node limits you want are uploaded. Do one of the following:
    • To install the licenses on the appliance, click Next.
    • If you have not uploaded all the files you need, click Back until the Upload License Files panel is displayed, and then repeat steps 5 through 8 to upload and verify the missing license files. Click Next.
  11. In the License Installation Complete panel, click Close.
  12. When prompted to restart the security gateway, do one of the following:
    • To continue working and restart the security gateway at a later time, click No. The new licenses will not take effect until you restart the security gateway. When you are ready to restart the security gateway, on the System menu, click Reboot.
    • To restart the security gateway now, click Yes.
