How to register and activate Symantec Scan Engine 5.0

Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine 5.0 requires a license file in order to be activated. You will receive the license file after registering online.
To license your product, you must first register with Symantec. After registering with Symantec, a license file will be emailed to you. License files are digitally signed, so any attempts to edit a license file will result in corruption of the file and render it invalid.

Obtaining a license file

Follow the steps in this section to register with Symantec and download a license file.

You will need the following information for registration:
Symantec Serial Number, which is printed on the Symantec Value License (Certificate).
Contact details of your technical support contact (Network Administrator).
Email address to receive the license key.

1. Navigate to the Licensing Portal at http://licensing.symantec.com.
2. Log on to the Licensing Portal.
3. Click License Management.

The License Management application offers a variety of functions that enable flexible management of Symantec Entitlements and related License Keys. This application is used primarily to obtain License Keys. There are three (3) steps to get a License Key:

1. ADD an Entitlement to your portal account
2. REGISTER your Entitlement to get a License Key
3. RECEIVE your License Keys via email

For detailed steps of navigating through the Symantec License Portal, Please click "Help" located in the top right corner of the License Portal log-in screen.


Note: Symantec's licensing tool compresses or "zips" license files to make them smaller and quicker to download. These "zipped" files are not self-extracting, and require third-party software such as WinZip or PKZip to open. If you are unsure whether you need zip utility software, visit the WinZip or PKZip Web sites to download an evaluation copy. To install the license file(s):
  1. Access the scan engine administrative interface.
      1. Launch a Web browser on any computer on your network that can access the server that is running the scan engine.
      2. Go to the following URL: http://<servername>:<port>/ where <servername> is the host name or IP address of the server that is running the scan engine and <port> is the port number that you selected during installation for the built-in Web server. The default port number is 8004.
      3. If a "Warning - Security" dialog box appears, click Yes to confirm that you trust the integrity of the applet.
      4. In the Enter Password box, type the password for the administrative account.
      5. Press Enter.
  2. On the administrative interface, in the left-hand pane, click System. If no license has been installed, when you open the administrative interface, the System tab is selected by default.
  3. Under Views, click License.
  4. Under Tasks, click Install License.
  5. In the Install License window, click Browse.
  6. In the Load File window, browse to the folder location in which you saved the license file, select it, then click Open.
  7. Click Install. A status message indicates that the license was successfully installed.

To check the license status:
  1. On the administrative interface, in the left pane, click System.
  2. Under Views, click License. The licensing information appears in the right-hand pane.

Warning: Do not delete the license file called SSE-CSAPI-License.slf located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Licenses.
If you delete it, you must reinstall Symantec AntiVirus Scan Engine 5.0 to restore functionality.
