How to manually uninstall the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x for Windows 98/Me client

Question/Issue:
This document describes how to uninstall the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x (Symantec AntiVirus) client from Windows 98/Me manually.


Solution:
The easiest and preferred method for removing the Symantec AntiVirus client is to use the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Windows Control Panel. However, due to an error or for some other reason, you find that you must uninstall Symantec AntiVirus client manually.

This document describes how to manually remove Symantec AntiVirus client from the following three places:


Removing Symantec AntiVirus from the registry


WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure that you modify only the keys specified. Read the document How to back up the Windows 95/98/NT registry before proceeding.

To remove Symantec AntiVirus client from the registry
  1. Start the Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\LDVPMenu
  3. Right-click LDVPMenu, and then click Delete.
  4. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\DLLUsage\VP6
  5. Right-click VP6, and then click Delete.
  6. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  7. Right-click vptray in the right pane, and then click Delete.
  8. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
  9. Right-click Defwatch, and then click Delete.
  10. Right-click Rtvscan, and then click Delete.
  11. In the left pane, click My Computer.
  12. On the Edit menu, click Find, and search for the following text:

    9526CFE08DA32DC4CB754D39A75FCCE0
  13. Delete every value that includes that string.
  14. In the left pane, click My Computer.
  15. On the Edit menu, click Find, and search for the following text:

    VirusProtect6
  16. Delete every value that includes that string.
    These registry keys should be removed for all versions of Symantec AV client if Add/Remove programs does not uninstall Symantec AV client correctly.
  17. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
  18. Delete the following subkey:

    {0EFC6259-3AD8-4CD2-BC57-D4937AF5CC0E}

If Symantec AntiVirus client is the only Symantec product installed on the computer
  1. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec
  2. Right-click SharedDefs, and then click Delete.
  3. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Symevnt
  4. Right-click Symevnt, and then click Delete.
Symantec AntiVirus client is now disabled. However, there will still be traces of the program in the registry. You must restart the computer for the registry changes to take effect.

To remove Symantec AntiVirus from the Start menu
  1. On the Windows taskbar, right-click Start, and then click Open.
  2. Double-click Programs, then double-click Symantec Client Security.
  3. Right-click Symantec AntiVirus Client, and then click Delete.

To remove Symantec AntiVirus from the hard disk
  1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the Program Files\Symantec_Client_Security folder.
  2. Right-click the Symantec AntiVirus folder, and then click Delete.


    WARNING: Delete the Symantec and Symantec Shared folder only if Symantec AntiVirus is the only Symantec product installed on the computer.

  3. Navigate to the Program Files folder.
  4. Right-click the Symantec folder, and then click Delete.
  5. Navigate to the \Program Files\Common Files folder.
  6. Right-click the Symantec Shared folder, and then click Delete.
  7. Exit Windows Explorer.
  8. (Optional) Run the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
    Running the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility removes additional settings that could interfere with reinstalling Symantec AntiVirus.

About the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
For information on downloading and using the tool, read the Microsoft article Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

To run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
  1. Double-click the downloaded file to install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Programs > Windows Installer Cleanup.
    The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility should display a list of programs that have been installed using the Windows Installer.
  3. Select Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition from the list, and then click Remove.
  4. Exit the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

You should now be able to reinstall Symantec AntiVirus normally.
