Changing a Symantec Client Security 3.x or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.x client installation from unmanaged to managed

Question/Issue:
You performed an unmanaged installation of the Symantec Client Security 3.x or Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.x client. You want to convert the unmanaged client to a managed client.

Solution:
Step 1: Copy the Grc.dat file from the parent server to the client that you want to manage.

Note: To move a client to a new parent and also assign the client to a new client group, copy the Grc.dat from the folder with the client group's name on the parent server to the target client. For example, if you want to move the client to an existing group called "Roaming Clients," copy the Grc.dat file from "C:\Program Files\SAV\Symantec AntiVirus\Groups\Roaming Clients" on the parent server.

To locate the Grc.dat file on the parent server

If the parent server is running Windows, copy the Grc.dat file from the VPHOME shared folder on the parent server.
By default, the shared folder points to <OS drive>:\Program Files\SAV on a Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition parent server.
By default, the shared folder points to <OS drive>:\Program Files\SAV\Symantec AntiVirus on a Symantec Client Security parent server.
To learn how to find the VPHOME shared folder, follow the directions in the "To find the VPHOME shared folder" section in the Technical Information section of this document.
If the parent server is running NetWare, copy the Grc.dat file from the SYS:SAV folder.

To copy the Grc.dat file to the client
Copy the Grc.dat file to the following location:
<OS Drive>:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5

Notes:

By default, the Application Data folder is hidden. To show hidden and system folders, read the document How to make Windows show all files.
Clients will not retrieve virus definitions from the parent server until the Symantec AntiVirus service is restarted.

Step 2: Copy the root certificate from the parent server to the client that you want to manage.

To locate the root certificate on the parent server

On the intended parent management server, copy the server group certificate file from the Symantec AntiVirus program folder.
The file to copy has a file name that ends in .servergroupca.cer
The following is the default location on a Symantec AntiVirus server:
<OS drive>:\Program Files\SAV\PKI\Roots
The following is the default location on a Symantec Client Security server:
<OS drive>:\Program Files\SAV\Symantec AntiVirus\PKI\Roots

To copy the root certificate file to the client

On the client computer, paste the certificate file into the Roots folder.
The following is the default location on a Symantec AntiVirus client:
<OS drive>:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\PKI\Roots
The following is the default location on a Symantec Client Security client:
<OS drive>:\Program Files\Symantec Client Security\Symantec AntiVirus\PKI\Roots

After a few minutes, the client will find the Grc.dat file, make the appropriate changes to the registry, and then delete the Grc.dat file. The next time that the client checks in with the parent server, the client will appear in Symantec System Center. You can force the check-in by stopping and starting the Symantec AntiVirus service on the client or by restarting the computer.

Technical Information:
To find the VPHOME shared folder

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
In the Open box, type the following text:

cmd
Click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following command:

net share
Under Share name, find the VPHOME listing.
The folder that is listed in the Resource column is the Symantec AntiVirus program folder; which contains the Grc.dat file.
