How to start your computer with only Symantec and Microsoft services loading

STEP 2
  Choose your operating system
I use Windows 98
STEP 1
  Start Windows with only Microsoft and Symantec programs and services running

Click Start > Run.

In the Run dialog box, type the following text, and then click OK
msconfig

On the Startup tab, check any names that are in this list.
 
  •  acctmgr
  •  ccApp.exe

    If you see multiple checked entries of ccApp, uncheck all but one entry.
  •  ccEvtMgr
  •  ccProxy
  •  ccPxySvc
  •  ccRegVfy
  •  ccSetmgr
  •  csinject
  •  Ghost Start Service
  •  Ghost Start Tray App
  •  IS Cfgwiz
  •  ISSVC
  •  NAV Cfgwiz
  •  Nisum
  •  NPFMonitor
  •  Nprotect
  •  SchedulingAgent
  •  ScriptBlocking
  •  SNDMon
  •  Symantec Core LC

 Click Apply and then click OK.

Click Restart.
NOTE Note When you have completed your troubleshooting, restore your computer to its original settings. Go to STEP 2.
STEP 2
  Restore the computer to its original settings

Click Start > Run.

In the Run dialog box, type the following text, and then click OK.
msconfig

Click Normal Startup

Click OK.
5
Click Restart.
I use Windows ME
STEP 1
  Start Windows with only Microsoft and Symantec programs and services running

On the Startup tab, check any names that are in this list.

    If you see multiple checked entries of ccApp, uncheck all but one entry.

Only the names shown on this page should remain checked on the System Configuration Utility Static VXD tab. Any names that are now displayed on the Static VXD tab but are not in the list that follows should be unchecked.

STEP 2
  Restore the computer to its original settings

STEP 1

On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

Uncheck Process SYSTEM.INI File, Process WIN.INI File, and Load Startup Items.
Check Load System Services if it is not checked.

On the Startup tab, uncheck all of the files.
 You will checkmark some of these files in the next step, but this is the easiest way to make sure that all of the right files are checked.

On the Startup tab, check any names that are in this list.

On the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft Services. Then look at the names in the list. You need to compare them with the list of names that follow in this step. Only the names shown on this page should remain checked on the System Configuration Utility Services tab. Any names that are now displayed on the Services tab but are not in the list that follows should be unchecked.

 Check Load system services if it is not checked.

On the Startup tab, uncheck all of the files.
