Reinstalling the Microsoft Windows Installer


STEP 1
  Print this page

STEP 2
  Select your operating system
I use Windows 98 
STEP 1
  Download the Microsoft Windows Installer

Download the InstMsiA.exe file from the document Windows Installer Redistributable for Windows 95, 98 and Me
2
Save the file to the Windows desktop. Do not double-click it at this time.
STEP 2
  Rename the old Microsoft Windows Installer files

 Click Start > Shut down.
2
Choose Restart in MS-DOS mode, and then click OK.
3
At the DOS prompt, type the following, and then press Enter after each line.
 
cd \windows\system
ren msi.dll msi.old
ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old
exit

Restart the computer.
STEP 3
  Reinstall the Microsoft Windows Installer

On the desktop, double-click InstMsia.exe.
2
Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Restart the computer.
I use Windows Me 
STEP 1
  Download the Microsoft Windows Installer
1
Download the InstMsiA.exe file from the document Windows Installer Redistributable for Windows 95, 98 and Me

Save the file to the Windows desktop. Do not double-click it at this time.
STEP 2
  Rename the old Microsoft Windows Installer files

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

On the Startup disk tab, click Create Disk to start the process.
4
Insert a formatted floppy disk, and then click OK when prompted.
5
Either insert the Startup disk or leave the floppy disk in the drive and restart the computer.

Click Minimum Boot at the startup menu.

At the DOS prompt, type the following, and then press Enter after each line.
 
cd \windows\system
ren msi.dll msi.old
ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old
exit

Remove the Startup disk and restart the computer in Safe mode.

As the computer restarts, press and hold down the F8 key until the Windows 98/Me Startup menu appears.

When the Windows Me Startup Menu appears, select Safe Mode and press Enter.
STEP 3
  Reinstall the Microsoft Windows Installer

On the desktop, double-click InstMsia.exe.
2
Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
3
Restart the computer.
I use Windows 2000 
STEP 1
  Download the Microsoft Windows Installer

NOTE Note If you are visiting the download page for the first time, near the top of the page you may see a "Validation Recommended" box. If you see this, click the "Continue" link and follow the prompts to get to the actual download page containing the "Files in this Download" section.

 Save the file to the Windows desktop. Do not double-click it at this time.
STEP 2
  Rename the old Microsoft Windows Installer files

Click Start > Run.

In the Run line, type the following:

Click OK.

At the command prompt, type the following, and then press Enter after each line.
 
cd \winnt\system32
ren msi.dll msi.old
ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old
exit

Restart the computer.
STEP 3
  Reinstall the Microsoft Windows Installer

On the desktop, double-click WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe.
2
Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Restart the computer.
I use Windows XP 
STEP 1
  Download the Microsoft Windows Installer

Download the WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe file from the document Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable
 
NOTE Note If you are visiting the download page for the first time, near the top of the page you may see a "Validation Recommended" box. If you see this, click the "Continue" link and follow the prompts to get to the actual download page containing the "Files in this Download" section.

Save the file to the Windows desktop. Do not double-click it at this time.
STEP 2
  Rename the old Microsoft Windows Installer files

STEP 3
  Reinstall the Microsoft Windows Installer

On the desktop, double-click WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe.
2
Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Restart the computer.
I use Windows Vista
            
  Unregister the Microsoft Windows Installer and register it again
1
Click Start > Run.
2
In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
msiexec /unregister

Click OK.
4
Click Start > Run.
5
In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
msiexec /regserver

Click OK.
STEP 3
  Reinstall your Norton products

Choose the statement that best describes your situation:

I have the product on a CD

1
Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.
2
Click Install Product Name, where Product Name is the name of your Norton product.
3
Follow the on-screen instructions.

I downloaded the product from the Symantec Store and still have the installation file

Find the product installation file. Unless you saved it elsewhere, it is on the Windows desktop.

Double-click the installation file.
 Wait for the installation wizard to appear—it may take a minute or two.

Click Install Product Name, where Product Name is the name of your Norton product.
4
Follow the on-screen instructions.

I downloaded the product from the Symantec Store and no longer have the installation file

Go to the Symantec Store Order Status Web page.
2
Type in your order number and password to log on, and you will see your order information.
If you do not know your order number and password, you can look up your order using your email address.

On your Order Summary, click Start Download.
NOTE Note
  • If you purchased your product more than 60 days ago, you can click Buy Now to buy the Extended Download Service and download the product again.
  • If you purchased your product more than a year ago, you cannot download your product anymore. You can buy a new version of your product at a discounted price by purchasing an upgrade. Go to our Upgrades and Renewals page, then choose your product and version to see your upgrade options.

The product came pre-installed on my computer

Reinstall your Norton product from the back-up CD that came with your computer.

If you do not have the back-up CD or are not sure how to use it, please contact your
computer manufacturer for help.

I downloaded the product from my Internet service provider (ISP)

Find the product installation file.
 If you no longer have the installation file, download it again from your ISP.

Double-click the installation file.
 Wait for the installation wizard to appear—it may take a minute or two.
3
Click Install Product Name, where Product Name is the name of your Norton product.
4
Follow the on-screen instructions.
