Norton Ghost 9.0 compatibility with Windows XP Service Pack 2

  Norton Ghost 9.0 and Windows XP Service Pack 2
Norton Ghost 9.0 is compatible with Windows XP Service Pack 2. However, you need to modify the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) policy and the Boot.ini file to allow Norton Ghost 9.0 to launch its services during startup.
NOTE Note
 This document covers modification of Windows XP Service Pack 2 to allow Norton Ghost 9.0 to install and run properly. If you already have Norton Ghost 9.0 installed, and are installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, you have two options:
 
  • Uninstall Norton Ghost 9.0, install Windows XP Service Pack 2, and make the modification outlined in this document. Then reinstall Norton Ghost 9.0.
STEP 1
  Modifying the Data Execution Prevention policy

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Control Panel.

Double-click System.

On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.

On the Data Execution Prevention tab, click Turn on DEP for all program
and services except those I select.
If this option is unavailable, go to Step 2."

Click OK to save the change.
STEP 2
  Modify the Boot.ini file

Restart the computer.

Immediately after the Power On Self Test (POST), which is usually signified
by a beep, press F8.

On the Windows Advanced Options Menu, select Safe Mode, and then press Enter.

Select your Windows XP installation, and then press Enter.
If Windows XP is installed on a drive other than drive C, substitute the
correct drive letter.

Log on to the computer.

Click Yes.

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.

In the Open box, type the following text:
cmd

Click OK.

At the command prompt, type the following commands:
c:
cd\
attrib -r -s -h boot.ini

Without closing the DOS window, click Start > Run.

In the Open box, type the following text:
notepad c:\boot.ini

Click OK.

In Notepad, add the following line under the [operating systems] heading:
/NOEXECUTE=OPTOUT

If you see any other lines under the [operating systems] heading that start
with "/NOEXECUTE," delete them.

On the File menu, click Save.

Exit Notepad.

In the DOS window, at the command prompt, type the following command:
attrib +r +s +h boot.ini

Press Enter.

Close the DOS window.

Restart the computer.
You should now be able to install Ghost 9.0 successfully.
