Error: "Stop 0x0000050 . . . " when restarting the computer after installing Norton AntiVirus 2005


This problem has been reported to Symantec Development team. At this time, we do not know the exact cause or contributing factors to this problem. We will update this document when new information or a solution is found. Follow the steps in this workaround to find the file that is causing the problem and add it to exclusions.

STEP 2
  Find the file that is causing the error message

On the Windows desktop, click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

Double-click Administrative Tools.

Double-click Event Viewer.

In the left pane, click System.

In the right pane, look for an entry that has Warning in the Type column and SAVRT in the Source column.

Double-click the SAVRT entry.

The name of the file that is causing the problem is in the Description field. Write down the name and location of the file.

Repeat step 5-7 for all Warning entries listed in the Type column in Event Viewer.
STEP 3
  Add the file to Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect exclusions

Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.

Click Options. If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.

On the left screen, click Auto-Protect > Exclusions.

On the right screen, click New.

Click Browse, and select the file that you want to exclude.

Click OK, and then close the Options for Norton AntiVirus window.
STEP 4
  Scan the excluded file to make sure that it is virus free

Refer to line 7 in the STEP 1 - Find the file that is causing the error message above and locate the name of the file that is causing the problem.

On the Window taskbar, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer.

Go to the file that is causing the problem.

Right-click the file and click Scan with Norton AntiVirus.

Do the following, depending on whether the file is infected or not:
 
  • If the file is infected, then it will be automatically repaired, quarantined or deleted, depending on what type of threat is detected. Norton AntiVirus will also display the name of the threat with a link to a virus write-up on the Symantec Security Response Web site. Go to the write-up and follow the removal instructions to make sure that the threat has been completely removed.
  • If no file is infected, then you are finished.
    The file will not be scanned by Auto-Protect. However, it will be scanned during a manual scan.
