Scheduled scans for Norton AntiVirus do not run when logged off

Situation:
You are using Norton AntiVirus under Windows 2000/XP. You scheduled a scan to run at a specific time. If you are logged on to Windows, then the scan runs as expected. However, if you have logged off--or you have restarted the computer but not yet logged on--then the scan does not run. When you do log on, the scan starts to run. In this case, when you check the NAV log, you find that the scan is shown as having run at the scheduled time, not at the time it actually ran.

Solution:
This document applies only to the situation where the scheduled virus scan fails to run when logged off. If the scheduled scan fails to run when you are logged on, then read the document A virus scan does not run at the scheduled time. Otherwise, continue on to the next section.

To remove the scheduled task in Norton AntiVirus

  1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
  2. In the left screen under System Status, click Scan for Viruses.
  3. In the right screen, click any existing scan, except the default entry "Scan my computer," and then click Delete.
  4. Click Yes.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each entry that appears.
  6. Close Norton AntiVirus.

To enter the scheduled Norton AntiVirus scan from the Windows Task Scheduler
  1. Click Start > Programs or All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks.
  2. Delete all Norton AntiVirus entries.
  3. Click Add Scheduled Task.
  4. Click Next and then click the Browse button.
  5. Make sure that the "Look in" box displays Local Disk C: and then click Program Files and Norton AntiVirus.
If you installed Norton AntiVirus to a folder other then the default folder, then browse to that folder.
  6. Locate and double-click the file, depending on your program version:
    • Norton AntiVirus 2004 or 2005: Navw32.exe
    • Norton AntiVirus 2003: Navwnt.exe file
  7. Continue to go through the scheduling wizard. Enter your password when prompted. At the last screen, check Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish and then click Finish.
  8. Press End and the space bar. Then type the following:

    /L /noresults
  9. Click OK.
  10. Enter your password, and then click OK again.
