How to create a Windows startup disk

This information is provided for your convenience. Startup disks are a function of the Windows operating system. If you need help with this, please contact Microsoft.

I use Windows XP

This creates an MS-DOS startup disk that allows you to boot to a DOS prompt. The disk does not contain any other tools or utilities.

1
Insert a blank floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.
2
Click Start > My Computer.
3
Right-click the A:drive icon, and then click Format.
4
Under Format Options, click Create an MS-DOS startup disk.
5
Click Start, and then follow the on-screen instructions

I use Windows Me/98

This creates an MS-DOS startup disk that allows you to boot to a DOS prompt.

1
Insert a blank floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.
2
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
3
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4
On the Startup Disk tab, click Create Disk.
NOTE Note For Windows Me: In some circumstances, you may be prompted to insert the Windows Me CD-ROM when you click Create Disk. This can occur if the installation files that are required to create the Startup disk are not on the hard disk.
5
Click OK.
