Edit the registry to prevent extra programs from starting when Windows loads |

In the next steps you will edit the Windows registry. Back up the registry before you make any changes to it, because incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Delete only the specified registry key. For instructions, read Backing up the Windows registry. |

- Close all open programs.

- In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

- When the Registry Editor opens, navigate to the following key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

- In the right pane is a list of the programs that start when Windows loads. You must edit all of these entries EXCEPT the "(Default)" entry.
- Double-click the first entry on this list.

- In the Edit String dialog box, click Value Data field.

- Press Home on your Keyboard to move the cursor to the front of this field.

- Type the following text at the beginning of the text in the "Value Data" field:

- Repeat lines 7 - 12 to edit all entries in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run registry key. (except for Default)

- Repeat lines 6 - 13 for editing the following registry keys:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx

- Exit the Registry Editor.

Remove all items from the Windows Startup folders |

- Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer.

- Browse to the following folder:
- C:\WINNT\Temp\
|

- Click Edit > Select All.
|

- Press the Delete key on your keyboard.

- In the right pane, right-click and select New > folder.

- Type the following text:

- In the right pane, right-click and select New > folder.

- Type the following text:

- Where username is the user that you are currently logged in as. For example, if your login is Bill, you would name this folder Bill_startup.

- In the left pane of the windows explorer, browse to the following folder:
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

- Left-click once in the right pane.

- Click Edit > Select All.

- Browse back to the following folder:
- C:\WINNT\Temp\All_users_startup\

- Right-Click in the right pane and select Paste.

- Repeat lines 12 - 17. Only this time cut the items from your C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder, where username is the user you are currently logged in as, and then paste them into the username_startup folder that you created in line 11.

- Restart your computer.

Close any running programs |
|

- On your keyboard press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

- On the Windows Security dialog box, click the Task Manager button.

- On the Processes tab, verify that the only processes that appear are from this list:

- csrss.exe
- explorer.exe
- lsass.exe
- msiexec.exe
- mstask.exe
- regsvc.exe
- services.ece
- smss.exe
- spoolsv.exe
- svchost.exe
- system
- system Idle Process
- winlogon.exe
- taskmgr.exe

- If there is something listed in the Windows Task Manager list on the Processes tab that does not appear in the above list select it, then press the End Process button, and then click Yes to end this extra process.

Reset your original computer settings |

- Follow the lines in the STEP 2 above. This time, remove the "rem" from the registry values.

- Follow the lines in the STEP 3 above. This time, copy the shortcuts from your C:\WINNT\Temp\All_users_startup folder back to your C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.
