How to remove "Scan with Norton AntiVirus" from shortcut menus


Situation:
You want to know how to remove the "Scan with Norton AntiVirus" shortcut menu item that appears when you right-click objects.

Solution:
To remove this feature you must edit the registry.

CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry may result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Be sure to modify the specified keys only. See the document How to back up the Windows 95/98/NT registry before proceeding.

There are two ways to remove the "Scan with Norton AntiVirus" shortcut menu items. Option 1 is a permanent method which simply removes the feature from Norton AntiVirus. Option 2 accomplishes the same thing, but gives you a way to get the feature back without having to reinstall Norton AntiVirus.

Option 1
To remove this feature from shortcut menus (with the exception of right-clicking the Start button):

  1. Open the Registry Editor:
    • Windows 95/98 users:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
      2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
    • Windows NT 4.x users:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
      2. Type regedt32 and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
  2. Navigate to the following key (folder):

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
  3. Delete the Norton AntiVirus key.

    NOTE: In Windows NT the key is named NavNT
  4. Exit the Registry Editor.
  5. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

To remove this feature from all shortcut menus (including right-clicking the Start button):
  1. Open the Registry Editor:
    • Windows 95/98 users:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
      2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
    • Windows NT 4.x users:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
      2. Type regedt32 and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
  2. Navigate to the following key (folder):

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{067DF822-EAB6-11cf-B56E-00A0244D5087}
  3. Delete the {067DF822-EAB6-11cf-B56E-00A0244D5087} key.
  4. Exit the Registry Editor.
  5. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.


Option 2
  1. Open the Registry Editor:
    • Windows 95/98 users:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
      2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
    • Windows NT 4.x users:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
      2. Type regedt32 and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
  2. Navigate to the following key (folder):

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\NortonAntivirus
  3. Click the Registry menu, and then click Export Registry File.
  4. Name and save the file into the C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus folder.
  5. Delete the Norton AntiVirus key.
  6. Navigate to the following key (folder):

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{067DF822-EAB6-11cf-B56E-00A0244D5087}
  7. Click the Registry menu, and then click Export Registry File.
  8. Name and save the file into the C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus folder.
  9. Delete the {067DF822-EAB6-11cf-B56E-00A0244D5087} key.
  10. Exit the Registry Editor.
  11. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

If you want to reenable the "Scan with Norton AntiVirus" shortcut menu feature:
  1. Start the Registry Editor as described earlier.
  2. Click the Registry menu, and then click Import Registry File.
  3. Browse to the C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus folder.
  4. Double-click the first .reg file that you saved.
  5. Repeat these steps to import the second .reg file that you previously saved.
  6. Exit the Registry Editor.
  7. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

To disable or remove the ability to scan from the right-click pop-up menu on a Windows NT/2000 system running Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, remove the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\LDVPMenu
