How to update virus definition files using the Intelligent Updater

Situation:
You want to know how to download and use the Intelligent Updater for your version of Norton AntiVirus (NAV).

Solution:
The Intelligent Updater is available as one large file or several smaller files. The single large file is intended to be used on computers in a network environment. The smaller files can be copied to floppy disks and used to update computers without network connections or Internet access. The larger file is available for specific versions of NAV, and as a single, all inclusive package, which is intended for network administrators who are responsible for maintaining multiple versions of NAV on multiple platforms. Please follow the instructions in the sections that apply to your situation.

Determine which version of NAV is being used
If you are not sure which version of NAV is being used, then start NAV, click the Help menu, and then click About Norton AntiVirus.

Download the Intelligent Updater file

  1. Go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html
  2. Click the appropriate Language and Product, and then click Download Updates.
  3. Read the table carefully to determine which set of files you should download for your version of NAV.

How to update your virus definitions using the single file
After downloading the file to your hard drive, locate the file that you downloaded, for example, 20020912-005-x86.exe, and then double-click it.

NOTE: If you are using Windows 3.1 or a DOS computer, then you must reboot. This is not necessary for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000.

To update your virus definitions using the split package:
For computers that do not have an Internet or network connection, the Intelligent Updater is available as an .exe file and two zip files that can be saved to separate floppy disks. To update a computer using this set, see the document How to update virus definitions on computers without Internet or network connections.

NOTE: The split Intelligent Updater package cannot be used to Update Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0 servers or Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.6 servers, but can be used to update Corporate Edition clients.
