Error: "PDFMakerWindow:WINWORD.EXE - Application Error" or "PDFMakerWindow:EXCEL.EXE - Application Error" when closing a Word document or Excel spreadsheet
Situation:
Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2002 is installed. When you close a Microsoft Word document, Excel spreadsheet, or PowerPoint presentation, you see one of the following error messages:
- PDFMakerWindow:WINWORD.EXE - Application Error. The instruction at "<memory address>" referenced memory at "<memory address>". The memory cannot be read.
- PDFMakerWindow:EXCEL.EXE - Application Error. The instruction at "<memory address>" referenced memory at "<memory address>". The memory cannot be read.
- PDFMakerWindow:POWERPNT.EXE - Application Error. The instruction at "<memory address>" referenced memory at "<memory address>". The memory cannot be read.
You may also see one of the following error messages:
- WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
- Excel.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being generated.
- PowerPoint found an error that it can't correct. You should save presentations, quit, and then restart PowerPoint.
Solution:
These errors can be caused by a conflict between the NAV plug-in for Microsoft Office and the Adobe Acrobat 5 PDFMaker macro template files, which are added to Office startup.
NOTE: If you see the error message "Winword caused an Invalid Page Fault in VBE6.DLL" then see the document Error: "Error VBE6.DLL" when opening Microsoft Word 2000 documents after installing WinFax PRO
A NAV program update was released to fix this problem. To install the update, run LiveUpdate, download the program update, and then restart the computer when prompted.
If the NAV program update does not fix the problem, then follow these instructions.
If you have Acrobat 5, and if you are using the PDFMaker macros, then you can either disable the NAV Office plug-in or move the PDFMaker macro template files out of the startup folders.
To disable the NAV Microsoft Office plug-in:
- Close Microsoft Office if it is running.
- Start NAV.
- Click Options, and then click Miscellaneous.
- Uncheck the Enable Office plug-in entry located under "How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected."
- Click OK.
If you cannot disable the plug-in from within NAV, then follow these instructions to manually disable the plug-in:
To manually disable the NAV Microsoft Office plug-in:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- Type--or copy and paste--one of the following, depending on how NAV is installed:
If NAV is installed a stand-alone product:
regsvr32 -u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
If NAV is installed as part of SystemWorks:
regsvr32 -u "c:\program files\norton systemworks\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
- Click OK at any prompts or messages.
To move the PDFMaker template files located in the Office and Adobe folders:

- Open Windows Explorer.
- Navigate to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup
- Right-click the PDFMaker.dot file, and then click Cut.
- Navigate to a folder that you can use to store the PDFMaker template files.
- Right-click the folder, and then click Paste.
- After moving the PDFMaker macro template files, restart Microsoft Office, open and then close a Word document, to determine whether the error occurs.
For Excel:
- Navigate to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart
- Right-click the PDFMaker.xla file, and then click Cut.
- Navigate to a folder that you can use to store the PDFMaker template files.
- Right-click the folder, and then click Paste.
- After moving the PDFMaker macro template files, restart Microsoft Office, open and then close an Excel spreadsheet, to determine whether the error occurs.
For PowerPoint:
- Navigate to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\PDFMaker
- Right-click the PDFMaker.ppa file, and then click Cut.
- Navigate to a folder that you can use to store the PDFMaker template files.
- Right-click the folder, and then click Paste.
- After moving the PDFMaker macro template files, restart Microsoft Office, open and then close a PowerPoint presentation, to determine whether the error occurs.
