Computer slows down as Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect CPU utilization reaches 95% or higher
Situation:
After installing Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2002 under Windows XP or Windows 2000, you notice that the computer is considerably slower. When you open the Windows Task Manager, you notice that the NAV Auto-Protect service NAVAPSVC.EXE is using 95% or more of the computers CPU time.
Solution:
Try the following workarounds to fix the problem.
- Download the latest NAV program update.
- Ensure that the performance options for the operating system are set to "Applications" or "Programs" rather then "Background services."
- Unregister and then register the Auto-Protect service.
To download the latest NAV program updates
Download the latest NAV program update. To install the NAV program update, run LiveUpdate, download all available updates and restart the computer when prompted.
To check that the operating system performance options are set to Applications
Follow the steps that apply to your operating system:
- Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools and then click Computer Management.
- In the left screen, right-click "Computer Management (Local) and then click Properties.
- Click the Advanced tab and then click the Performance Options button.
- Check Applications and then click OK.
- Click Start.
- Right-click My Computer and then click Properties.
- In the left screen, right-click "Computer Management (Local) and then click Properties.
- Click the Advanced tab and then click the Settings button under the Performance heading.
- Check Programs under the "Processor scheduling" and "Memory usage" headings.
- Click OK.
To unregister and then register the Auto-Protect service
Unregister and then re-register the NAV Auto-Protect service by following these steps:
- Exit all open programs.
- Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
- Type the following and press Enter:
"C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe" /unregserver
Note: This is the default location for NAV installed as a stand-alone product. If NAV is part of Norton SystemWorks (NSW), then substitute the program path for the NAV module of NSW.
- Click Start > Run. The Run dialog box appears.
- Type the following, and then press Enter:
"c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe" /service
Note: This is the default location for NAV installed as a stand-alone product. If NAV is part of Norton SystemWorks (NSW), then substitute the program path for the NAV module of NSW.
- Close the Services program.
- Open NAV.
- Click Options, and then click Auto-Protect.
- In the right screen, click "Enable Auto-Protect (Recommended)" and "Start Auto-Protect when Windows starts up," and then click OK.
- Restart the computer.
If these workarounds do not work, then the problem might be caused by a conflict with another program. Follow the instructions in the next section to locate the program that is causing the conflict.
To pinpoint the source of a conflict between Auto-Protect and another program
- Clean boot the computer by following the instructions in the document that applies to your version of Windows:
- Enter Msconfig as outlined in the clean boot document.
- Click the Services tab.
- Check Navapsvc.exe.
- Click OK, and then restart the computer.
- Check the CPU usage for Navapsv.exe. If the CPU usage continues to be high, then uninstall and re-install NAV. If the problem continues in the clean boot mode and you would like to provide information to Symantec, then skip to the section headed Post a message to Symantec and follow the steps to send a message with the details of what happened to Symantec Online Technical Support.
- If the usage is normal, then re-add applications one at a time using Msconfig. Restart the computer after each addition.
- If the CPU usage increases after an application has been added, then that program is the cause of the conflict with NAV Auto-Protect.
