How to uninstall Norton SystemWorks 2000 or 2001 manually from Windows 95/98/Me
Situation:
You want to uninstall Norton SystemWorks 2000 (version 3) or 2001 (version 4) manually, or a technician has advised you that you need to uninstall it manually.
Solution:
This document outlines the comprehensive manual method for uninstalling Norton SystemWorks (NSW) 2000 or 2001 from a Windows 9x or Windows Me system. For other, easier methods of uninstalling Norton SystemWorks, see the document How to uninstall previous versions of Norton products.
NOTE: If you are having problems installing Norton SystemWorks 2002, then see the document How to use the Norton SystemWorks cleanup utility (SymClean) before using this document.
If you are trying to uninstall Norton SystemWorks 2001 manually from Windows NT or Windows 2000, then see the document How to manually uninstall Norton SystemWorks 2001 from Windows NT/2000.
If you are uninstalling Norton SystemWorks 2002 manually, then see the document appropriate for your operating system:
NOTES:
- Unless specifically mentioned, Windows refers to Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me.
- Disable Script Blocking in Norton AntiVirus before proceeding with the manual uninstallation. For instructions to disable Script Blocking, see the document How to disable Script Blocking manually.
- This document assumes that Windows is installed in the C:\Windows folder. If your installation of Windows is different, then substitute the appropriate folder name where necessary.
- This procedure will take 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Use this method as a last resort. It involves manually deleting files and editing the Windows registry.
NOTE: Different versions of NSW contain different components, and NSW installs different components based on the version of Windows to which you are installing. In addition, you may not have installed all of the NSW components. If you do not see some of the items, then proceed to the next step.
Start Windows in Safe mode
You should take the additional precaution of starting Windows in Safe mode to minimize the possibility of conflicts with other programs that may be running when Windows is started normally.
To start Windows in Safe mode:
- Windows 95: When you see the message "Starting Windows 95," press F8. Choose Safe mode from the Windows 95 Startup Menu that appears.
- Windows 98/Me: As the computer restarts, press and hold the Ctrl key. Choose Safe mode from the Startup Menu that appears.
NOTE: Safe mode uses the default Windows VGA and mouse drivers. While in Safe mode, peripheral devices, such as CD-ROM drives, printers, network, and sound cards may not be available.
