Error: "LU1812: An update failed to install. A program that was part of this update failed . . . " when running LiveUpdate


This solution requires that you use Internet Explorer. If this page is open in any other Web browser, open it in Internet Explorer.

NOTE Note The steps to fix this problem depends on the operating system that you are using. If you have Windows Vista, go to STEP 4.

STEP 1
  Print this page

We suggest that you print this page before you start. PRINT

STEP 2
  Register the msxml3.dll file

Click Start > Run.

In the Run dialog box, type the following text:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll

Click OK.

Do one of the following depending on the message that you see:

  •  If you see the message "DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\system32\msxml3.dll succeeded," go to Step 4.
  •  If you see the message "LoadLibrary("C:\Windows\system32\msxml3.dll") failed..." go to Step 3.  
STEP 3
  Reinstall MSXML 3.0

To download and install MSXML 3.0, read the Microsoft document, Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7).

STEP 4
  Run LiveUpdate

Run a tool to start LiveUpdate. RUN IT NOW


If you are using Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security, and still receive the LU1812 error, go to STEP 5. If you are using any other Norton program, click the "What if this didn't work" at the bottom of this article.

STEP 5
  Save your Product Key
Note
  • If you have installed Norton Add-on Pack, run the Add-on Pack migration tool to backup your Norton AntiSpam and Parental Controls settings. Read, Exporting your Norton Add-on Pack settings while upgrading to Norton Add-on Pack 2.1.
  • If you downloaded your product from your Internet service provider (ISP), then skip these steps, and contact your ISP to get the latest version of your product.
  • If you have a product CD, or you downloaded your product from Symantec, you can locate the Product Key on the back of the CD sleeve, or in the confirmation email that you received from Symantec for your download purchase. Once you write down the Product Key, go to STEP 6.

Start your Norton product.

On the top right corner of the main product window, click Norton Account.

Type in your email address and password for your Norton Account, then click Next.
NOTE Note If you do not have a Norton Account set up already, click Create a Norton Account, complete the form, then click Next.

Click Next to continue to your Norton Account.

Sign into your Norton Account using your email address and password.

Click the Norton product that you want to update.

Write down the Product Key.

Sign out of your Norton Account, then continue with STEP 6 below.
STEP 6
  Update your Norton Product

Many problems have been fixed in the latest Norton product update. If you have a Norton 2006 product installed in Windows XP with a valid subscription, then you are eligible for the latest product update. Click the button to update your Norton program.
UPDATE NOW

If you purchased your product through your Internet service provider (ISP), please be sure that you have the latest version available from your ISP. Run LiveUpdate to download and install the most recent updates.
