Symantec Registry Repair Tool does not remove some of the invalid registry keys that were created during the Service Pack upgrade

This problem can happen if you do not have enough permission to remove the registry keys.

STEP 1

STEP 2
  Log on as an Administrator

Restart the computer.

At the logon screen, select the account that has Administrator rights.

You may need to type a password. If you are not sure how to do this, contact the person or company that set up your computer.

  Set the registry permissions
Warning Warning In the next steps you will edit the Windows registry. Back up the registry before you make any changes to it, because incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the specified registry key.

Do one of the following:

  •  For Windows Vista: Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.
  • For Windows XP: Click Start > Run.

When the Run dialog box appears, type the following text, and then click OK.

In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00x\Enum
 Where x is any number.

Right-click the Enum key, and then click Permissions.

In the Permissions for Enum window, click Add.

In the "Enter the object names to select" field, type the following text:

Administrators

Click Check Names, and then click OK.

Under "Group or user names", click Administrators.

Under "Permissions for Administrators," ensure that Allow is checked for Full Control and Read.

Click Apply, and then click OK.
STEP 4
  Download and run the Symantec Registry Repair Tool

Download the SymRegFix.exe file. DOWNLOAD

Save the file on to your desktop.

Do one of the following:

  •  For Windows Vista: Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.
  • For Windows XP: Click Start > Run.

When the Run dialog box appears, type the following text.

Click OK

In the command prompt, type the following text and press Enter:

"Desktop\SymRegFix.exe" /override

If the Open File - Security Warning window appears, click Run.

Click I accept the License Agreement, and then click Next.

If you do not accept the License Agreement, you cannot run this tool.

In the Symantec Registry Repair Tool window, click Next.

When the tool completes, click Finish.
