What to do when the "Your computer might be at risk. Your virus protection is unknown" appears when using Norton 2002/2003/2004/2005 products

This solution requires that you use Internet Explorer. If this page is open in any other Web browser, open it in Internet Explorer.

  How the alert looks like?

The alert balloon looks like this:

WSC_Alert_Systemtray

If you click the balloon, the Windows Security Center appears. In the Virus Protection section of the Windows Security Center, you see "Norton AntiVirus reports that it is installed, but its status is unknown. . . " as shown here:

WSC_Alert

  Why is this happening?

The Windows Security Center monitors and then reports on the status of security programs installed on your computer. Norton security products contain tamper protection features that prevent other programs, including Windows, from determining their status.

This happens because the Windows Security Center sees that a Norton security program is there, but Windows cannot monitor the Norton program's status, it reports that your computer might be at risk. (In the Windows Security Center, the status for Virus Protection appears red and displays "CHECK STATUS.")

NOTE Note These "alerts" only indicate that the Windows Security Center cannot determine the virus protection status. It does not necessarily mean that there is something wrong with your virus protection. Please refer to your Norton security product for your antivirus or firewall status.

What can be done to correct this?

The Norton Windows Management Instrumentation Update allows the Windows Security Center to correctly identify the status of your Norton security products and gives you the option of configuring how Norton security products and the Windows Security Center alerts you.
