Removing LiveUpdate after Add/Remove Programs does not work and no other Symantec products are installed

Warning Warning

You should use this document only if all Symantec products are uninstalled from the computer and you want to remove LiveUpdate.

STEP 2
  Delete LiveUpdate from the Windows registry
Warning Warning In the next steps you will edit the Windows registry. Back up the registry before you make any changes to it, because incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Delete only the specified registry key.
For instructions, read Backing up the Windows registry.

Click Start > Run.

In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
regedit

Click OK.

In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Select and delete the LiveUpdate key.
STEP 3
  Configure Windows to show all files

Start Windows Explorer.

Do one of the following, depending on your operating system:
 
  • In Windows 98, click View > Options.
 
  • In Windows Me/2000/XP, click Tools > Folder Options.

Click the View tab.

Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Do one of the following:
   
  • In Windows 98, in the Advanced settings box, click Show all files under the "Hidden files" folder.
 
  • In Windows Me/2000/XP, uncheck Hide protected operating system files and click Show hidden files and folders under the "Hidden files" folder.

Click Yes if you see a warning dialog box.

Click Apply, and then click OK.
STEP 4
  Delete LiveUpdate folders from the hard drive

In Windows Explorer, navigate to the following folder:
 C:\Program Files\Symantec

Right-click the LiveUpdate folder, and click Delete.

Go to the appropriate folder for your version of Windows:
 
  • Windows 2000/XP

    C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\    
  • Windows Me

    C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\
 
  • Windows 98

    C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\
   
NOTE Note If you upgraded from another version of Windows, your path may match that of the older operating system.

 Delete the LiveUpdate folder.
