Error: "LU1814: LiveUpdate could not retrieve the update list"

Situation:After you start LiveUpdate, you see the message "LU1814: LiveUpdate could not retrieve the update list."

Solution:

This solution requires that you use Internet Explorer. If this page is open in any other Web browser, open it in Internet Explorer.

This message indicates that there was a problem downloading one or more updates. The instructions that follow can fix this problem.

STEP 1
  Print this page

We suggest that you print this page before you start.

Because you must return to this page after you restart the computer, add this page to Favorites.

STEP 2
  Temporarily disable your firewall (for a brief test)
NOTE Note If you are not using any non-Symantec firewall, go to Step 3.

Start the firewall program.

Most firewall programs display a small icon in the area near the clock. Try right-clicking or double-clicking the program icon.

Temporarily disable the firewall.

Read the program's help or contact the program publisher's support for instructions.

Start your Norton program and run LiveUpdate

Re-enable the firewall. Do this now whether or not LiveUpdate ran successfully.

Do one of the following:
  • If LiveUpdate ran successfully when your firewall was disabled, go on to line 6.
  • If LiveUpdate did not run successfully when your firewall was disabled, go to Step 3.

Change the settings in the firewall program so that the program allows the following file to connect to the Internet:

C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LuComServer*.exe

If you are not sure how to do this, contact the firewall program publisher. When you have changed the rule, run LiveUpdate again.
STEP 3
  Check settings in a Windows file
I use Windows Vista

Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

In the Control Panel window, click Additional Options.

Click Symantec LiveUpdate.

In the User Account Control window, click Continue.

On the FTP tab, click I want to use my Internet Options FTP settings.

On the HTTP tab, click I want to use my Internet Options HTTP settings.

On the ISP tab, click Internet Options in the Control Panel.

Click Apply > OK.
I use Windows XP
1
Click Start > Control Panel.

In the Control Panel window, double-click Symantec LiveUpdate.
 If you do not see Symantec LiveUpdate, on the left side, first click Switch to Classic View.

On the FTP tab, click I want to use my Internet FTP settings.

On the HTTP tab, click I want to use my Internet HTTP settings.

On the ISP tab, click Internet Options in the Control Panel.

Click Apply > OK.
I use Windows 98/Me/2000

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

In the Control Panel window, double-click Symantec LiveUpdate

On the FTP tab, click I want to use my Internet FTP settings.

On the HTTP tab, click I want to use my Internet HTTP settings.

STEP 4
  Download and install the latest version of LiveUpdate
Run a tool to install the latest version of LiveUpdate. RUN IT NOW
