Uncompressing files in Windows NT, 2000, and XP

Situation:
This document describes to process of uncompressing files in Microsoft® Windows NT®, Windows® 2000, and Windows® XP.

Solution:
Follow the instructions for your version of the Windows operating system.

To uncompress files in Windows NT

  1. Open a Windows Explorer window.
  2. On the View menu, click Options.
  3. Verify that Show all files is checked.
  4. Check Display compressed files or folders with an alternate color.
  5. Click OK.
  6. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Find > Files or Folders.
  7. Click Find.
  8. Right-click each compressed file that is found (indicated in blue), click Properties, and then uncheck Compressed.
    In particular, look for the Ega.cpi file, and ensure that Compressed is unchecked.
  9. Reboot the system.


To uncompress files in Windows 2000
  1. Open a Windows Explorer window.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. On the View tab, check Display compressed files and folders with an alternate color.
  4. Verify that Show hidden files and folders is checked.
  5. Click OK.
  6. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Search > For Files or Folders.
  7. Expand Search Options.
  8. Check Advanced Options.
  9. Check Search Slow Files.
  10. Click Search Now.
  11. Right-click each compressed file that is found (indicated in blue), click Properties, click Advanced, and then uncheck Compress contents to save disk space.
    In particular, look for the Ega.cpi file, and ensure that Compress contents unchecked.
  12. Reboot the system.


To uncompress files in Windows XP
  1. Open a Windows Explorer window.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. On the View tab, check Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color.
  4. Verify that Show hidden files and folders is checked.
  5. Click OK.
  6. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Search > For Files or Folders.
  7. Click All files and folders.
  8. Click More advanced options.
  9. Check Search hidden files and folders.
  10. Click Search.
  11. Right-click each compressed file that is found (indicated in blue), click Properties, click Advanced, and then uncheck Compress contents to save disk space.
    In particular, look for the Ega.cpi file, and ensure that Compress contents is unchecked.
  12. Reboot the system.
