"Error 1650 Partition too fragmented to copy or resize"

Situation:
The following message appears:
"Error 1650 Partition too fragmented to copy or resize"

Solution:
To resolve this problem, defragment the partition. You may need to use the defragmentation software more than once.

Note: If the master file table (MFT) is severely fragmented, earlier versions of PartitionMagic cannot make changes to the partition. In this situation, you can use a third-party utility to defragment the MFT. The latest versions of PartitionMagic and ServerMagic can make changes to partitions that have fragmented MFTs.

If the problem still occurs, or the partition is not fragmented, upgrade to the latest version of PartitionMagic or ServerMagic.

If the problem still occurs, run CHKDSK /F on the drive.

Technical Information:
This problem occurs when a partition is too fragmented to copy and resize.

It can also occur then an NTFS partition nears it's maximum capacity. At this point, the operating system optimizes the disk which changes the NTFS structure. These changes cause the error message to appear even if the partition is not too fragmented.
