Message states image file cannot be moved or deleted because it is write-protected
Situation:
When trying to move or delete an image file, you see a message that states the file cannot be moved or deleted because it is write-protected. You may also see Error 1810 or "Access denied."
Solution:
Before you begin: If you are seeing this error message when using Drive Image 7.0, read
How to save images in a workgroup and avoid the error "Access Denied."
This problem is normally caused by Windows file-security settings. To resolve the problem that is causing the error, proceed with the section appropriate for your version of Windows.
Windows XP Home
If you are running Windows XP Home, perform the following procedure.
To fix the problem
- Reboot your computer.
- Immediately before Windows XP starts loading, press F8.
- On the menu that appears, select the Safe Mode option.
If the image is split into multiple files (.002, 003, etc.), you must perform steps 4 through 11 for each file, or you can select all of the files at once and perform the steps on the files as a group.
- Right-click the image file you are having problems with, and then click Properties.
- On the Security tab, click Add.
- In the Select Users or Groups dialog box, in the "Enter the object names to select" column, type your own user name (the name you use to log in to Windows XP).
- Click OK.
The user name that you entered should now appear below the SYSTEM user.
- Select your user name.
- Under Permissions for, check Full Control.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
You should now be able to move or delete the image file.
Windows XP Professional
If you are running Windows XP Professional, first disable simple file sharing, and then grant the proper permissions.
To fix the problem
- Start Windows Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
- On the View tab, uncheck Use Simple File Sharing (the last option in the list).
If the image is split into multiple files (.002, 003, etc.), you must perform steps 4 through 11 for each file, or you can select all the files at once and perform the steps on the files as a group.
- Right-click the image file you are having problems with and then click Properties.
- On the Security tab, click Add.
- In the Select Users or Groups dialog, in the "Enter the object names to select" column, type your own user name (the name you use to log in to Windows XP).
- Click OK.
The user name that you entered should now appear below the SYSTEM user.
- Select your user name.
- Under Permissions for, check Full Control.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
You should now be able to move or delete the image file.
Windows 2000
Note: If the image is split into multiple files (.002, 003, etc.), you must perform the following procedure for each file, or you can select all the files at once and perform the steps on the files as a group.
To fix the problem
- Right-click the image file you are having problems with, and then click Properties.
- On the Security tab, click Add.
- In the Select Users or Groups dialog, choose your user name from the list, or type it in the space provided.
- Click OK.
The user name that you entered should now appear below the SYSTEM user.
- Select your user name.
- Under Permissions, check Full Control.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
You should now be able to move or delete the image file.
