How to create an installation package for pcAnywhere 10.x

Situation:
You want to know how to create and use an install package for pcAnywhere 10.0 or 10.5.

Solution:
pcAnywhere 10.x offers administrators the ability to create custom packages of pcAnywhere designed to meet their particular needs. Once an administrator has determined the functionality and features that they want their users to have, the Packager builds a Windows Installer File (.msi) or a Setup file (.exe). The pcAnywhere CD contains an Administrator's Guide (Pa10a_01.pdf) in the \Docs\Manuals folder. The CD also contains some pre-configured packages representing the most common uses of pcAnywhere, which can also be deployed using the tools described in the document How to deploy a pcAnywhere 10.x package.

The Packager creates an .msi or .exe file, so any tool that is capable of deploying these types of files should function with the pcAnywhere packages. For the purposes of this release, we have tested and documented the following deployment tools:

To create an installation package for pcAnywhere 10.x:

NOTE: The Package Creation feature is not supported under Windows 98, 98SE, or Windows Millennium. However, the packages created can be installed under any supported operating system.
  1. Launch pcAnywhere, and click the Packages icon.
  2. Click New Item to create a new package.
  3. On the General tab, type a description for the package.
  4. Click the Components tab, and select the components that you want the package to install.
NOTE: There are some components that have sub-components available.
  5. Click the Objects tab, and select the objects that you want in the package.
  6. Select the items that the host and remote objects will use as templates.
  7. Select the Host object, if any, that will start when Windows starts.
  8. Select the Object Set object to include.
NOTE: An Object Set is a set of Properties, or a configuration of pcAnywhere to use.
  9. Click the Policy tab, and select the dialog boxes that you choose to display on each screen after you have installed this package.
NOTE: You can click on each Resource Policy to view the screen shot.
  10. Click the Security tab. This tab allows you to lock this package so that it cannot be changed by anyone once it has been created. You can also select only specific hosts that the remotes can connect to by entering specific security IDs.
NOTE: The security does not allow anyone to edit the package. If you need to change something after the package has been built, you must create a new package.
  11. Click the Installation tab, and select which screens will be displayed during the installation of the package.
  12. Click Shortcut, and select which shortcuts will be installed with the package.
  13. Click Customize, and customize any parts of the pcAnywhere installation.
  14. Click OK, and click the Output tab.
  15. Select the name of the package, where it is created, and the format of the package.
  16. Click Build. The package is created in the location you selected.

If you need further help with creating installation packages, consult the Administrator's Guide or contact technical support. Refer to the document Support options for pcAnywhere 10.x for further information.
