Windows 2000 does not restart after pcAnywhere 9.0 installation

Situation:
After installing pcAnywhere 9.0.1, or after installing pcAnywhere 9.0.0 and then updating to 9.0.1, you cannot restart Windows 2000.

Solution:
To resolve this problem, you must uninstall pcAnywhere while in Windows 2000 Safe mode. See the document How to start Windows 2000 in Safe mode for instructions on restarting in Safe mode. If you cannot start in Safe mode, and are running Windows 2000 on a FAT file System, please see the "Rename AWGina.dll" section below.

To uninstall pcAnywhere

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Software.
  3. Double-click pcAnywhere in the list of installed programs.
  4. Click Remove.
  5. Restart Windows normally.

Note: The update for pcAnywhere 9.2 is no longer available via LiveUpdate. Before reinstalling pcAnywhere, download the file 921up.exe, and save it to your desktop.

After downloading the update, reinstall pcAnywhere. Near the end of installation, a dialog box appears with check boxes for LiveUpdate, the Readme file, and a desktop icon. Uncheck the option next to LiveUpdate, since the update is no longer available via LiveUpdate. Once the installation has completed, do not reboot the computer. Double-click the 921up.exe file to install the update. Do not restart Windows until after you have run the update.

To fix a blue screen with pcAnywhere 9.2
  1. Start pcAnywhere.
  2. Click Tools > Application Options.
  3. Click the Host Operation tab.
  4. Change the host video mode to Compatibility.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Close pcAnywhere.
  7. Shut down and restart Windows.

This should enable Windows to start. However, pcAnywhere will not work as a service, will not have Symmetric or Public key encryption available, and you cannot use Ctrl+Alt+Del on the host.

To rename AWGina.dll if you cannot restart the computer in Safe mode and Windows 2000 is installed on a FAT file system
  1. Restart Windows 2000 in Safe mode with command prompt. See the document How to start Windows 2000 in Safe mode for instructions on restarting in Safe mode with a command prompt.
  2. At the DOS prompt, type cd\winnt\system32 and then press Enter.
  3. Type ren awgina.dll awgina.old and then press Enter.
  4. Type copy msgina.dll awgina.dll and then press Enter. This replaces the AWGina.dll file with the MSGina.dll file.
  5. Restart the computer in safe mode.
  6. Uninstall pcAnywhere. See the document How to uninstall pcAnywhere from Windows NT/2000/XP.
  7. Restart the computer in Normal mode and then re-install pcAnywhere.
  8. Near the end of installation, a dialog box appears with check boxes for LiveUpdate, the Readme file, and a desktop icon. Leave the LiveUpdate option checked. LiveUpdate will start immediately after the installation, and it will update pcAnywhere 9.0 to 9.2. Do not restart Windows until after LiveUpdate has run. After LiveUpdate finishes, restart Windows.

If you cannot restart the computer in Command Prompt mode and the original Windows 2000 registry was not encrypted
You can perform a parallel installation of Windows 2000 and modify the registry.

WARNING: Symantec strongly recommends that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified. Please see the document How to back up the Windows registry before proceeding.

To disable pcAnywhere (so you can restart Windows NT or Windows 2000)
  1. Install a parallel copy of Windows NT/2000 to a different folder on the local hard disk.
For assistance with performing a parallel installation of Windows NT or Windows 2000, please see the document How to perform a second installation of Windows NT or Windows 2000
  2. Boot into the second installation of NT/2000.
  3. Click Start > Run.
  4. Type regedt32 and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
  5. Click Window, and then click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on local computer.
  6. Click Registry, and then click Load Hive.
  7. Locate and select the System file on the original Windows NT/2000 installation. By default this file is located in C:\WINNT\System32\Config\System
This assumes that the original installation of Windows NT/2000 used C:\WINNT as the default location. There are three files called SYSTEM. If you have turned on the file extensions in the Explorer, you will see the files SYSTEM, SYSTEM.ALT, and SYSTEM.SAV. Open the SYSTEM file that has no extension.
  8. Click Open.
  9. In the Load Hive dialog box, type TEST for the Key Name, and then click OK. (If you enter a different key name, substitute that key name for TEST in the steps below.
  10. This is a critical step. Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key, you will see the key TEST. This is the key that you want to modify. It has many of the same values and keys as the current registry. It is very easy to become confused about which registry you are modifying. Be careful.
  11. Locate and select the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TEST\Select
  12. On the right side, double-click the Current entry. A DWORD Editor window appears. Write down the value that is in the Data field, and then click Cancel.
  13. Locate and select the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TEST\ControlSet00<x>\Services\AW_HOST
(where <x> is the value of the "Current" entry noted in step 12.)
  14. On the right side, double-click the Start entry. A DWORD Editor window appears. Change the value to 4 and then click OK.
  15. Locate and select the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TEST\ControlSet00<x>\Services\vgasave
(where <x> is the value of the "Current" entry noted in step 12.)
  16. On the right side, double-click the ImagePath entry. A String Editor window appears. Replace the current path with:

    systemroot\system32\drivers\vga.sys

    and then click OK.
  17. Locate and select the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TEST\ControlSet00<x>\Services\vgasave\device0\

(where <x> is the value of the "Current" entry noted in step 12.)
  18. On the right side, double-click the InstalledDisplayDrivers entry. A Multi-String Editor window appears. Replace the current entry with VGA and then click OK.
  19. Locate and select the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TEST\ControlSet00<x>\Services\vgastart
(where <x> is the value of the "Current" entry noted in step 12.)
  20. Double-click the ImagePath entry. A String Editor window appears. Replaced the current path with:

    systemroot\system32\drivers\vga.sys
  21. Locate and select the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TEST\ControlSet00<x>\Services\vgastart\device0
(where <x> is the value of the "Current" entry noted in step 12.)
  22. On the right side, double-click the InstalledDisplayDrivers entry. A Multi-String Editor window appears. Replace the current entry with VGA and then click OK.
  23. Locate and select the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\TEST
  24. Click Registry, and then click Unload Hive.
  25. The Registry Editor displays the warning message "Registry Editor will unload the currently selected key and all its subkeys. Do you want to continue this operation?" Click OK.
  26. Verify that the files MSGINA.DLL and VGA.DLL are in the <SystemRootDrive>:\system32 folder of the original installation.
If they are not, then copy them from the parallel installation.
  27. Verify that the file VGA.SYS is in the <SystemRootDrive>:\system32\drivers folder of the original installation.
If it is not, then copy it from the parallel installation.
  28. Restart Windows NT/2000, this time selecting the original installation of Windows NT or Windows 2000. Uninstall pcAnywhere. Please see the section "To uninstall pcAnywhere" at the beginning of this document.
