How to install public key encryption using Internet Explorer
Situation:
You want to set up public key encryption using Internet Explorer (IE) so that you can use public key encryption with pcAnywhere.
Solution:
This document demonstrates the steps necessary to obtain a public key encryption certificate (Digital ID) from VeriSign. This document is only for obtaining a certificate for Microsoft Internet Explorer. There are three basic parts to this process:
- Getting to the correct page on the VeriSign Web site
- Getting and installing the Digital ID
- Associating the Digital ID with your e-mail account
NOTE: pcAnywhere Technical Support cannot provide
any support for problems with the setup or configuration of public-key encryption with pcAnywhere, nor does it support the utilities Certcons.exe and Machkey.exe. All information contained in pcAnywhere documents on public-key encryption is provided as-is and should be considered as a guideline only.
Part One - Getting to the correct page
- Using the Internet Explorer, go to the VeriSign Web page at http://www.verisign.com.
- Click Products from the menu across the top of the page.
- Click the "Secure E-mail" option.
- On the right side of the screen, click "Try a Digital ID FREE for 60 days."
- The next screen will give you two options. Choose the Class 1 Digital ID by clicking "Enroll Now" for that option.
Part Two - Obtaining and installing the public key encryption certificate
At this point you will begin the enrollment process. VeriSign will guide you through four steps:
- Complete the Enrollment Form.
- Check E-Mail.
- Pick up Digital ID.
- Install Digital ID.
Step 1: Complete the Enrollment Form
- VeriSign will present an enrollment form. Fill out the following parts:
- Contents of Your Digital ID
- Easy Web Site Registration
- Challenge Phrase
- Choose Full-service or 60-day Trial
- Billing Information (credit card information)
- You will also see the following options:

- Select a provider. pcAnywhere should work with any cryptographic provider, although you may have only one available to choose from.
- Check the "additional security" option, and then submit the application.
- The next screen prompts you to set the security level.
- Click Set Security Level. The following screen appears.

- Select the desired security level, and then click Next. This takes you to Step 2.
Step 2: Check E-mail

VeriSign's Digital ID Center will email you a pin number. Check you email inbox for this message. The message will be similar to the following:

Copy the Digital ID given to you by VeriSign, and then click the link to VeriSign's ID Center and the next step.
Step 3: Pick up Digital ID

Copy the ID Number you received in the space provided and click Submit. This takes you to step 4.
Step 4: Install Digital ID

The Common Name field above will show your name as typed when you submitted the form.
The Email Address is the one you submitted in the same form.
Click Install to complete step 4.
Part Three: Associating the Digital ID with your Email account
After installing your new Digital ID, you will see the following screen. If you use either Outlook or Outlook Express, follow these instructions. Otherwise, they do not apply.
You are finished obtaining and installing your public key Digital ID.
NOTE: Each computer you use and each computer you connect to with public key encryption needs to go through this process. Each computer must have its own key.
To actually communicate with another computer using public key, you will need to go back to VeriSign's Web site and search the repository for all computers you plan to communicate with and download their certificates.
