Error: "This printer and/or driver does not support remote printing" when printing to a remote printer
Situation:
When printing host documents to the remote, you see the following message: "This printer and/or driver does not support remote printing."
Solution:
The printer driver generates this message on the remote computer. Contact the printer manufacturer to see if there is a newer version of the driver, or if a different driver will work for you.
Here are additional suggestions for certain printers:
- Generic Text Only printer driver
Use another basic print driver such as the Epson FX-80.
- Canon BubbleJet printer drivers
Canon suggests using one of the following printer drivers for black and white printers:
- IBM Proprinter
- IBM Proprinter X24
- IBM Proprinter X24E
- Color Canon printers should use the Epson LQ2550 printer driver.
- Epson LQ 850
- Epson LQ 510
Note: If you use the Epson drivers, you will have to adjust some DIP switch settings on the printer.
- HP OfficeJet. HP Office Jet printers do not support remote printing, but they do not generate an error message. Hewlett-Packard suggests using a DeskJet 500 driver.
NOTE: You need to end all HP background tasks on the remote before remote printing.
- HP DeskJet printer drivers: 400, 600, 660C, 820C, 850c/855c, 712c, 1150c
If the remote printer is using the Hewlett-Packard proprietary printer drivers that ship with the DeskJet series of printers, try installing the HP DeskJet printer drivers that shipped with Windows on both the host computer and the remote computer. This bypasses the HP printer drivers and enables pcANYWHERE to print remotely.
The following Deskjet printer drivers have been tested and work with pcANYWHERE:
- 320
- 550c
- 560c
- 1200c
- 1600c
All HP DeskJet printers that have a 'c' at the end of their name are color printers. Almost all of the printers that do not have a 'c' at the end of the name are black and white printers, but can print color with an add-on from Hewlett Packard.
Hewlett-Packard technical support recommends using their 550c driver for any printer that generates this error message. The 550c driver is their standard Deskjet driver and will print color; however, it will not print as "vividly" as the driver for a specific printer model.
Hewlett-Packard manufactures several multi-function printers. These printers act as a printer, scanner, copier, fax machine, and may also process email. These printers install with drivers that reside in memory and control the printer port. This prevents remote printing. Generally, these printers will only install and operate with their own drivers. Alternative drivers will not work.
There are reports that neither the HP820 nor HP1000 will remote print with either the manufacturer's drivers or with alternative drivers. Information from customers indicates that this is an issue with two kinds of print job formatting (ppa or pco) that are not compatible with each other. This has not been tested.
The HP 3100 Laserjet will only install and operate with its own drivers. See the document pcANYWHERE and the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 3100 printer for further information.
- Postscript compatible printers
It is recommended to install a non-Postscript printer driver for remote printing.
Note: As in any case where you have modified the printer driver on the remote, make sure the remote computer can print locally without pcANYWHERE before trying to print remotely.
