How to uninstall pcAnywhere

Situation:This document describes how to remove pcAnywhere from the computer.

Solution:Back up current configuration items
NOTE: The Data folder cannot fit on a single high density disk unless you delete the Aw.swp file from the Data folder. The Aw.swp swap file is a cache file that is generated when initiating a remote control session, and it can be deleted with no adverse effects.

Please be aware that this will not save any TCP/IP addresses you have added to the TCP/IP tab under Application Options. You can either write these down and reinsert them later, or you can use the technique described in the document How to save or copy TCP/IP lists in pcAnywhere

Removing pcAnywhere

Under Windows 9x, there are four ways to uninstall pcAnywhere:

  • Run the uninstall program from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel
  • Run Remove.exe from the program directory
  • Restore a version of the registry saved prior to installing pcAnywhere
  • Remove pcAnywhere manually

To uninstall from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. Select pcAnywhere.
  4. Click the Add/Remove button.

pcAnywhere 9.2/10.0
If you are unable to uninstall pcAnywhere 9.2 or pcAnywhere 10.0 using the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel, you may need to use the Microsoft Install CleanUp Utility. This utility will remove any application that was installed to Windows using the Windows Installer, such as pcAnywhere 9.2 and pcAnywhere 10.

To obtain the utility, please see the Microsoft document OFF2000: Windows Installer CleanUp Utility - Q238413. Download and install the utility, and then follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft Install Clean Up. The utility appears.
  2. Select Symantec pcAnywhere from the list of installed applications, and then click Remove.

This will remove pcAnywhere and all of its associated drivers, registry keys, and values.

Remove.exe - pcAnywhere 9.0
NOTE: pcAnywhere 10 does not include the Remove.exe utility.
  1. Using the Windows Explorer, navigate to the ..\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere folder.
  2. Locate and double-click the file Remove.exe.

Remove.exe - pcANYWHERE32 7.x and 8.x
Click Start, point to Programs, point to pcANYWHERE32, and then click Remove pcANYWHERE.

NOTE: pcAnywhere Technical Support does not support deleting the pcAnywhere folder from the computer without going through one of the uninstall procedures above. Deleting the folder removes the program files, but does not clear the Windows Registry of pcAnywhere entries, nor does it clear the Start menu of pcAnywhere references.

Restore the registry
CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified.

Please see the document How to back up the Windows registry before proceeding. This document is available from the Symantec Fax-on-Demand system. In the U.S. and Canada, call (541) 984-2490, select option 2, and then request document 927002.

This will create a copy of your current registry. This can be used to restore Windows to its current state, if necessary.

This method involves restoring the Windows registry that existed prior to your installation of pcAnywhere. This is the best method to use if you have to manually remove pcAnywhere immediately after installing it. The longer pcAnywhere has been installed, the less desirable this technique becomes. The reason is simple: any applications you may have installed, or configurations to Windows or other applications you may have made, between the installation and the removal of pcAnywhere will be lost because so much of this information is stored in the registry. Restoring a registry that is two weeks old effectively wipes out any changes you have made to your computer for those two weeks. Obviously, the older the registry, the more you can potentially lose. If you have applications you cannot reinstall or you have configurations you do not want to lose - do not use this method. If you are unsure - do not use this method.

If you wish to use this method, see the document How to restore the Windows 95/98/98SE/Me registry using the pcAnywhere registry backup

Remove pcAnywhere manually
CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified.

Please see the document How to back up the Windows registry before proceeding. This document is available from the Symantec Fax-on-Demand system. In the U.S. and Canada, call (541) 984-2490, select option 2, and then request document 927002.

This will create a copy of your current registry. This can be used to restore Windows to its current state, if necessary.
Manually removing pcAnywhere involves two steps:
  • Editing the Windows registry.
  • Removing program files and folders.
    To edit the registry:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run windows appears.
    2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor appears.
    3. Navigate to the following key:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec
    4. Select the pcAnywhere key and then press Delete.
    5. Navigate to the following key:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD
    6. Select the AW_HOST key and then press Delete.
    7. Navigate to the following key:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
    8. Look for an entry like the following:
      • For pcANYWHERE 7.x and 8.x
        C:\Program Files\pcANYWHERE\Awhost32.exe /A.
      • For pcAnywhere 9.x
        C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere
    9. If you see an entry like this, select it and press Delete.
    10. Close the editor.
    To remove program files:
    For pcANYWHERE 7.x/8.x:
    1. Using the Windows navigator, go to the folder C:\Program Files.
    2. Select the pcAnywhere folder and press Delete.

    For pcAnywhere 9.x/10.0:
    1. Using the Windows navigator, go to the folder C:\Program Files\Symantec
    2. Select the pcAnywhere folder and press Delete.

This will effectively remove pcAnywhere from the computer. If you are interested in removing all files installed by pcAnywhere, refer to the following documents for those files and their locations. Be aware that the Symevnt files may be used by other Symantec applications, and that Microsoft redistributables may be used by several applications.

Removing a network (administrative) installation of pcAnywhere

Back up the configuration items
A network installation of pcAnywhere stores configuration items in two areas. The common configuration items are in the Data folder where the shared copy of pcAnywhere is installed. The personal configuration items are on the workstation's local hard drive. Move or copy these two Data folders to a different location if you want to save them.

Remove the administration installation of pcAnywhere

The workstation installations of pcAnywhere can be uninstalled in any of the four ways specified at the top of this document.
You can manually delete the pcAnywhere folder on the network drive if you have full administrator rights to the drive.
