Error: "Drive C: may not be configured correctly" when running Disk Doctor or Speed Disk after installing Norton Personal Firewall 2002

Situation:
You install Norton Personal Firewall 2002 (NPF) on a computer that has Norton Utilities (NU) or Norton SystemWorks (NSW) already installed. When you run Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) or Speed Disk (SD), you see the error message: "Drive C: may not be configured correctly. This Norton product cannot run on this drive..."

Solution:
Symantec is investigating this problem. The cause is unknown, and there is no solution at this time. This document will be updated when new information becomes available or a solution is found.

If you have this problem and you have Norton SystemWorks, please see the document in the Norton Internet Security Knowledge Base Error: "Drive C: may not be configured correctly" when running Disk Doctor or Speed Disk.

As a possible workaround, you can temporarily disable Norton Personal Firewall.

To temporarily disable Norton Personal Firewall:

  1. Click Start and then click Run. The Run dialog box will appear.
  2. In the Run Dialog, type msconfig and click OK. The System Configuration Utility will appear.
  3. Click the Startup tab.
  4. Scroll through the items listed in this section and locate the following 2 files:
    • Iamapp.exe
    • NISserv.exe
  5. Uncheck both items, then click OK. You will be prompted to restart your computer.
  6. After restarting, you should be able to run Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk without the error occurring.

To re-enable Norton Personal Firewall:
  5. Check both items, then click OK. You will be prompted to restart your computer.
  6. After restarting, Norton Personal Firewall will again be protecting your computer.
