How to manually uninstall Norton Utilities 2002 for Windows 9x/Me

Situation:
You want to uninstall Norton Utilities (NU). You tried the normal uninstall method of going through Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel, but this method did not work. You have already tried to reinstall, then uninstall, Norton Utilities, but the process did not finish.

Solution:
The common solution for this situation is to manually uninstall Norton Utilities. However, replacing the uninstall file with a good copy, or just deleting it, may allow you use the normal uninstall method.

To use this shortcut, and avoid manually uninstalling Norton Utilities:

  1. Delete the Uninst.isu file that is in the Norton Utilities folder.
  2. Reinstall Norton Utilities.
(The purpose of reinstalling Norton Utilities is to insert a good copy of a file used in the uninstall process, Uninst.isu)

Note: If the original installation stopped responding during the online registration or while creating the Rescue set, then skip these steps when you reinstall. You can register by telephone, letter, or from the Customer Service Web site, and you can create a Rescue Disk set after the installation is complete. For more information, see How to register your software when online registration does not work. See the Norton Utilities for Windows User's Guide for instructions on creating a Rescue set.
  3. Uninstall Norton Utilities.

If this shortcut does not work, then you manually uninstall NU.

Manually uninstalling Norton Utilities

This section provides complete information for manually uninstalling NU, using either Windows' Normal mode or Safe mode. If your computer won't start into Windows Normal mode, uninstall Norton Utilities from Safe mode; the methods are the same for both.

The general process for manually uninstalling NU is to:

  • Purge Norton protected files and remove Norton Protection from the Recycle Bin
  • Close all Norton Utilities programs
  • Remove Norton Utilities Registry entries
  • Remove Norton Utilities Programs from the Start menu and the StartUp folder
  • Remove Norton Utilities programs and folders
  • Check some final items

Note: Norton Utilities shares files with other Symantec programs. Once you complete NU manual uninstallation, you might find that one or more of the remaining Symantec programs no longer functions correctly. To correct the problem, reinstall the affected program.

Step 1 - Purge Norton protected files and remove Norton Protection from the Recycle Bin
  1. Retrieve data:
    1. Right-click the Norton Protected Recycle Bin and then click Norton Unerase. The Norton Unerase Wizard appears.
    2. Unerase any files you deleted but might want back later. Any files left in the Norton Protected Recycle Bin will be removed from the bin when you uninstall Norton Utilities and may not be recoverable after uninstallinf NU.
  2. Empty the Norton Protected Recycle Bin
    1. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon, and then click Properties.
    2. Click the Global tab.
    3. Select Use One Setting for All Drives.
    4. Click the Recycle Bin tab.
    5. Select Standard Recycle Bin.
    6. Change the text in the Title box to "Recycle Bin."
    7. Uncheck the Show Norton Protection Status option, if possible.
    8. If you cannot remove Norton Protection (Steps 2.A. through 2.G.), follow the instructions in the section "To replace specific Registry values with their defaults" later in this document.
  3. Remove Norton Protection:
    1. Click the Norton Protection tab.
    2. Click Remove Norton Protection.
    3. Click Empty Protected Files.
    4. Click OK twice.
  4. To purge Norton Protected files manually from DOS:
Use these steps if you cannot purge Norton Protected files (Steps 3.A. through 3.D.). If you previously deleted these files from Explorer or My Computer instead of from a DOS window, the Windows Recycle Bin has protected these files.
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt. The MS-DOS prompt appears.
    2. Enter the following commands at the prompt, pressing Enter after each line:

      C:
      CD\
      DELTREE \RECYCLED\NPROTECT

    3. Repeat Step 4.B for each drive on your system, replacing C with the appropriate drive letter.
    4. Type EXIT and then press Enter to return to the Windows desktop.

Step 2 - Close all Norton Utilities programs

After purging Norton protected files, close all Norton Utilities programs that are running.
  • To close System Doctor, right-click any sensor displayed in System Doctor and choose Close. If you are not running System Doctor, disregard these instructions.
  • To close Norton Protection, press Ctrl+Alt+Del. In the Close Program dialog box, double-click Nprotect. If you are not running Norton Protection, disregard these instructions.
  • To close other Norton Utilities programs, close any item listed on the Start bar that is a Norton Utilities program.

Step 3a - Backup the Windows registry

CAUTION: Windows stores much of its configuration information in the Registry. Incorrect changes to the Registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. We strongly recommend that you back up the system Registry before making any changes.

To back up the entire Registry:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
  2. Type REGEDIT and click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
  3. Click Registry and then click Export Registry File.
  4. Verify the following items in the Export Registry File dialog box:
    • Save in: Desktop
    • File name: Registry Backup
    • Save as type: Registration Files
    • Export range: All
  5. Click Save.
  6. Exit the Registry Editor.
  7. Verify that an icon labeled REGISTRY BACKUP.REG is on the Desktop.

CAUTION: Do not double-click the REGISTRY BACKUP.REG file on the desktop unless you intend to undo the changes you are making.

There are two ways to remove Norton Utilities entries from the Windows Registry:
  • Restore a backup that was created before you installed Norton Utilities
  • Remove the Norton Utilities entries from the registry

Use either method.

Step 3b - Restore a backup of the Registry
When Norton Utilities installs, one of the first things it does is to create backup copies of the Windows Registry files. If you have not installed any other programs since installing Norton Utilities, you can return your system to the state it was in prior to installing Norton Utilities by restoring the backup copies of the Registry.

If you installed other programs since installing Norton Utilities, or you updated programs or drivers, this method will partially or fully remove the changes. If you use this method, you need to reinstall the other programs and again update the programs or drivers.

This method is faster and easier than Step 3c. Use the Step 3b method if you are unable to start Windows, or if you do not want to manually edit the Registry and you have the files necessary for redoing any changes made since you installed Norton Utilities.

CAUTION: This method removes ALL changes made to the Registry since Norton Utilities was installed.

To restore the Registry from a backup:
  1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.
  2. Select "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode" and click OK.

Note: For Windows Me, you must boot from a Windows Startup disk. Refer to the document How to create a Windows Startup disk for additional information.
  3. At the DOS prompt, type the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:

    CD\WINDOWS
    ATTRIB -R -S -H *.DAT
    REN USER.DAT USER.ABC
    REN SYSTEM.DAT SYSTEM.ABC
    COPY SYSTEM.NU6 SYSTEM.DAT
Choose Y to replace the file
    COPY USER.NU6 USER.DAT
Choose Y to replace the file
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Proceed to "Step 4--Remove Norton Utilities from the StartUp folder and Start menu" later in this document.

Step 3c - Remove Norton Utilities Registry entries
This method is time-consuming and tedious. Use this method only if you do not have the Registry backups made by Norton Utilities or you made many changes to the system after installing Norton Utilities.

To manually edit the Windows Registry:
This method involves making changes to the system Registry. It has three parts:
  1. Replace specific Registry values with their defaults.
  2. Remove the main Norton Utilities program entries.
  3. Search for and remove other Norton Utilities program entries. (Optional)

CAUTION: Incorrect changes to the Registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified.

Note: The following instructions assume that the path to the Windows program folder is C:\Windows. If the Windows path is different on your computer, adjust these instructions to use the correct path.

Part 1: To replace specific Registry values with their defaults:
This procedure removes Norton Protection from the Registry and restores the original Recycle Bin and icons. These steps are necessary if "Step 1 - Purge Norton protected files and remove Norton Protection from the recycle Bin" failed, (This step was previously detailed in this document).
  1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
  2. Type REGEDIT and click OK.
  3. Click Edit, and then click Find. The Find dialog box appears.

This will remove the Core Registry entries for Norton Utilities 2002. To remove all traces of Norton Utilities 2002 from the Registry, continue with the following section. Otherwise, skip to Step 4.

Part 3: To search for and remove other Norton Utilities program entries (Optional):
The following section describes the removal of Registry entries by searching for the string NORTON UTILITIES. If you do not have any other Symantec products on this computer, you can follow the instructions below and substitute the string SYMANTEC before using the string NORTON UTILITIES. Do this ONLY if there are no other Symantec products on this computer.

Note: Not completing this section will leave many Norton Utilities entries in the Registry. However, those entries should have no effect on the operation of your computer, other than taking up space in the Registry.

  1. Scroll to the top of the left pane.
  2. Select My Computer.
  3. Click the Edit menu, and choose Find.
  4. Type:

    NORTON UTILITIES

  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the message "Finished searching through the Registry" appears.
  8. Repeat Steps 1 through 7, replacing the search string NORTON UTILITIES with each of the following, in turn:

    WINDOCTOR

    NPROTECT
    RESCUE

Note: Be aware that there are MANY Rescue entries. They can be left behind without any ill effects other than taking up space in the Registry.
  9. If you installed the Norton Utilities into a folder other than the default (C:\PROGRAM FILES\NORTON UTILITIES), repeat steps 1 through 7 above with the name of the folder you installed it to as the search string. For example, if you installed to the folder D:\NU, search for the string NU.
