Speed Disk stops responding at a particular percentage of the sorting phase during full optimization
Situation: When you run Speed Disk, it stops responding at a particular percentage of the sorting phase during full optimization. Speed Disk works fine using the "Defragment files only" option. You have tried clean booting your system, and the problem persists.
Solution:
Before you begin: Refer to the document Speed Disk stops responding at different points during optimization before proceeding with this solution.
Symantec is currently researching this problem. All indications are that Speed Disk is unable to process all of the Application Log information present on some drives. Consequently, during the sorting phase, Speed Disk stops responding.
In the meantime, there are two workarounds that allow Speed disk to complete successfully:
- Delete the Application Log folder (typically C:\Windows\Applog).
- In addition, you may want to change the sort option in Speed Disk from Day to Year or Quarter.
How to delete the Application Log folder Note: Windows automatically recreates the Application Log folder.
- Click Start, point to Programs, then click Windows Explorer.
- Click View and choose Folder Options.
- Click the View tab.
- Select "Show all files." (In Windows Me, select "Show hidden files and folders.")
- Click OK.
- In the left pane, find the Windows folder and click it. You should see the contents of the folder in the right pane.
- In the right pane, right-click the Applog folder, and choose Delete.
- Click OK when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
You can now rerun Speed Disk. If the Applog folder was the source of the problem, you should see Speed Disk progressing past the percentage at which it previously stopped.
How to Change the Sort option
- Open Speed Disk.
- Click Properties, and choose Options. The "Options for Speed Disk" window will appear as follows:

- Ensure that the drive listed is the same drive you are experiencing the problem with.
- Ensure that Full Optimization is selected.
- Click the Customize button. The "Customize Full Optimization" window will appear as follows:

- Click the By Date tab.
- Check the box next to Sort files by last access date.
- Under "Group files by..." select the Quarter or Year radio button.
- Click OK, and then click Save.
