Norton Diagnostics' memory test fails on systems with more than 256 megabytes of RAM
Situation: When running Norton Diagnostics, you notice that the memory test immediately fails. This often occurs if the system has more than 256 Megabytes of memory (RAM).
Solution:
Norton Diagnostics cannot run a memory test on systems having more than 256 MB of memory. This is a limitation of Norton Diagnostics and it is not a problem with your computer's RAM.
In some limited cases, the problem has been resolved by limiting the size of the disk cache file through the SYSTEM.INI file.
To limit the size of the disk cache file:
- Click Start and choose Run. The Run dialog box appears.
- Type the command appropriate to your operating system:
Windows 9x: SYSEDIT
Windows Me: MSCONFIG
and then click OK.
- Click the SYSTEM.INI title bar or tab to display the file.
- Choose the Search menu and then click Find.
- Type:
VCACHE
and then click Next.
- When you find the [vcache] section, add the MinFileCache= and MaxFileCache= lines to it, as shown below, (if there is no [vcache] section, create it). These settings limit the size of the disk cache file to between 5 and 8 MB. This should be acceptable for nearly all systems, regardless of the size of the hard drive and the amount of RAM.
[vcache]
MinFileCache=5120
MaxFileCache=8192
- Choose the File menu, and click Save.
- Close the System Configuration Editor.
- Restart the computer.
You may now be able to run the Norton Diagnostics memory test without any problems.
