Pubnetics' E-Transcript stops working after running Norton Utilities programs

Situation:
After running a Norton Utilities or Microsoft program, E-Transcript by Pubnetics no longer runs. It may display a message similar to "E-Transcript is not authorized to run on this system." This situation can occur after running Scan Disk, Norton Disk Doctor, Defrag, Speed Disk, Norton Web Services, or Disk Editor. E-Transcript is an accounting program.

Solution:
Some programs keep track of authorization to use the program with methods that can be affected by defragmenting and scanning utilities. E-Transcript appears to be one of these programs. Currently, we know of two methods E-Transcript might be using that could cause it to no longer function after running a software utility:

  1. The program keeps track of the exact location of specific files. When a defragmenter is used, such as Speed Disk or Defrag, the file is moved and the program can no longer find the information it needs to run.
  2. The program keeps track of the permissions to use the program by using a non-standard directory entry for one or more files. When a scanner is run, such as Norton Disk Doctor or Scan Disk, it will detect an invalid entry and offer to correct it, disabling the program.

If you have already run one of the utilities and E-Transcript is no longer working, it may be necessary to reinstall the program. If reinstalling E-Transcript does not resolve the problem, contact E-Transcript technical support for more information. Once the program is running again, you can configure Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk to prevent this problem.

Configuring Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk
To run Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk without affecting E-Transcript, configure Norton Disk Doctor to skip testing for File Date & Time, and configure Speed Disk so it doesn't move the E-Transcript files. Please be aware that changing the configuration option in Norton Disk Doctor can result in actual errors going undetected.

To configure Norton Disk Doctor to skip testing for File Date & Time:
  1. Start Norton Disk Doctor.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Select the Advanced tab.
  4. Check "Skip File Date & Time Tests."
  5. Click OK to save these changes.

To configure Speed Disk to not move files:
  1. Start Speed Disk.
  2. Click Properties, and then click Options. The Options for Speed Disk dialog box appears.
  3. Click Customize. The Customize dialog box appears.
  4. Select the Unmovables tab.
  5. In the File Specification box, type the following, clicking Add after each:

    *.ENT
    *.KEY
    *.RST

  6. Click OK to close the Customize dialog box.
  7. Click Save.
NOTE: This is very important. If you do not click Save at this point, the present setting will only be in effect until you close Speed Disk.
  8. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

For more information, such as a list of the specific files that should not be moved, contact E-Transcript technical support.
