How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 98
Situation: Your system displays various unexplained error messages or stops responding. You also notice one or more of the following:
- The problem happened during the installation of a Symantec product.
- The problem began after you installed a Symantec product.
- Even though the system may display an error message during startup, you can still run Windows 98 in either Normal or Safe Mode.
You suspect the problems may be caused by memory conflicts, old drivers, or incompatible software. In addition, you have contacted technical support, and they recommended you try a "clean boot" as a possible solution to the problem. You want to know how to do a "clean boot."
Solution:
Many problems running Windows or other programs occur because of conflicting drivers, programs, and other settings that are loaded when your computer starts. A clean boot refers to a method of starting your computer with a minimum number of drivers, programs, and settings so that you can determine the source of the problem. Windows 98 provides an easy way to clean boot your computer using the System Configuration Utility.
How to do a clean boot
To perform a clean boot in Windows 98, open the System Configuration Utility and configure the system to load the minimum number of files at system startup.
To use the System Configuration Utility to configure a clean boot:
- Click Start, point to Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and choose System Information. The Microsoft System Information program opens.
- Choose the Tools menu and click System Configuration Utility. The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
- Click the General tab (if necessary), then click Advanced. The advanced button is located in the bottom right of the General tab.
- Check VGA 640 x 480 x 16 and click OK.
- Click Selective Startup.
- Uncheck all of the boxes below the Selective Startup option.
- Click OK.
- Restart the computer.
- Test whether the problem still occurs. If the problem you encountered was during the installation of Norton Utilities, install Norton Utilities now.
How to "undo" a clean boot
You can undo a Windows 98 clean boot through the System Configuration Utility.
To undo a clean boot:
- Click Start, point to Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and choose System Information. The Microsoft System Information program opens.
- Choose the Tools menu and click System Configuration Utility. The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
- Click the General tab, if necessary.
- Click Normal Startup.
- Click Advanced.
- Uncheck "VGA 640 x 480 x 16."
- Click OK twice.
- Restart the computer.
If the clean boot resolves the problem
If the clean boot resolved the problem, try to identify where the problem originated. To isolate the problem, use the System Configuration Utility to selectively reload one program at a time, instead of undoing the clean boot (as described in the previous section).
To selectively load one program at a time:
- Click Start, point to Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and choose System Information. The Microsoft System Information program opens.
- Choose the Tools menu and click System Configuration Utility. The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
- Click the General tab, if necessary.
- Check the first empty box below the Selective Startup option.
- Click OK twice.
- Restart the computer.
If the problem recurs, the item you rechecked is the cause. Consult a technician or the computer manufacturer as to the cause of the problem.
If the problem does not recur, repeat steps 1 - 6 until the problem recurs.
If the problem does not recur after rechecking all items, the problem is most likely related to the video driver. Re-enable your video settings; if the problem then recurs, you may need to update the video driver. Contact the computer or video adapter manufacturer to inquire about new drivers.
To re-enable the video settings:
- Click Start, point to Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and choose System Information. The Microsoft System Information program opens.
- Choose the Tools menu and click System Configuration Utility. The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
- Click the General tab, if necessary.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Uncheck "VGA 640 x 480 x 16."
- Click OK twice, then restart the computer.
