Should Norton Disk Doctor repair invalid date and time stamps?
Situation: Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) finds files or folders with invalid date and time stamps. You want to know whether or not you should allow NDD to fix them.
Solution:
The answer depends upon the cause. Common causes include:
A program is using an invalid date or time on purpose
Some programs use an illegal date and time stamp for copy protection. There are only a few programs that do this, however. Most programs that use an invalid date or time, such as Top Producer, a program used in real estate, have changed or plan to change their method of copy protection soon. In these cases, do not fix the illegal date and time stamps. Contact the manufacturer of any custom industry software you may be running if you encounter this type of error in relation to one of its files, or if you lose functionality after repairing them.
If you are unsure whether any of your software uses this type of copy protection, allow Norton Disk Doctor to fix the illegal date and time stamps; just be sure to make an Undo disk. Then, if any of your software does not run after fixing the illegal date and time stamps, you can Undo the changes.
System clock is set for wrong date or time
If the computer seems to have a large number of files with illegal date and time stamps, the system clock may be set incorrectly. Exit Norton Disk Doctor and check whether the clock is set to the correct date and time.
A few files or folders were marked wrong by accident
If the computer has just a few illegal date and time stamps, there should be no problem with fixing them as long as they do not belong to a program that set those invalid dates or times on purpose. Just in case, always make an Undo disk.
Disabling the date and time test
Norton Disk Doctor allows you to disable the date and time test. To disable the date and time test, do the following:
- Open Norton Disk Doctor.
- Click Options.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Put a checkmark in the box next to "Skip File Date & Time Tests."
- Click OK.
