Cannot boot from the Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security for Macintosh CD
Situation:
You want to boot from the Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security for Macintosh CD to install the program or scan for viruses. For some reason you cannot do so.
Solution:
Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security for Macintosh do not require that you boot from the CD to install the program or scan for viruses. If you have not yet installed Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security for Macintosh, select the document below for the product you want to install.
It is true that there are certain system level viruses that require you to boot from a CD or a second source to remove them, but these are rare and only occur in Macintosh operating systems previous to Mac OS X. If Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh (NAVM) detects a system level virus that it cannot repair, do the following:
To remove a system level virus while booted from your hard disk:
NOTE: Before beginning these steps, Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security for Macintosh must be installed and up to date on your hard disk.
- Start up your computer in Mac OS 8.1 - 9.x from your hard disk.
- Open Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh.
NOTE: The version of NAVM installed on your hard disk and not on the CD.
- Click the File view tab in the Norton AntiVirus window.
- Double-click the hard disk which has the infected system.
- Select "System Folder", not the folder named "System".
- Click Scan/Repair to scan the System Folder for viruses.
- Select all files that say unrepaired under Comment in the Norton AntiVirus Summary window.
- Click Repair.
- Click Done, then quit Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh.
- Restart your computer.
- Open Norton AntiVirus and scan your hard disk for viruses. No system level viruses should be found.
If you continue to have problems with system level viruses, you can boot from a System CD.
To remove a system level virus while booted from your System CD:
NOTE: Before beginning these steps, Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security for Macintosh must be installed and up to date on your hard disk.
- Start up from the System Software CD that came with your computer.
- Open Norton AntiVirus, which is installed on your hard disk.
- Select the definitions installed on your hard drive. They are located here: Hard Disk/System Folder/Extensions/Norton AntiVirus Additions.
- Select the hard disk you want to scan.
- Click Scan/Repair. Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh will repair any viruses found on your hard disk.
