Files uploaded with an FTP client are empty when Norton Internet Security is installed

Situation:
After you install Norton Internet Security for Macintosh 2.0.x, when you upload a file to an FTP server using an FTP client in passive mode, the file you upload is empty or contains 0 bytes.

Solution:
In some cases when uploading files to an FTP server with an FTP client in passive mode, the files uploaded are empty or contain 0 bytes.
To avoid uploading empty files, disable passive mode in your FTP client and use active mode to transfer files. To disable passive mode in your FTP client, see the documentation for the FTP application that you are using. You may also need to disable passive mode in Mac OS X if it is enabled.

To disable Passive FTP Mode (PASV) in Mac OS X:

  1. Click the Apple menu, then System Preferences.
  2. Click Network, then the Proxies tab.

  3. Uncheck Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV), then click Apply Now.

NOTE: If Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) is not checked, then Passive FTP Mode is already disabled.
  4. Quit System Preferences. Passive FTP Mode is now disabled in Mac OS X.

If you must use passive mode to transfer files and are experiencing this problem, then you must remove Norton Privacy Control.

To remove Norton Privacy Control:
  1. Click the Go menu, then click Computer.
  2. Open the hard drive where Norton Internet Security is installed.
  3. Open Library, then StartupItems.
  4. Drag NortonPrivacyControl to the trash.
  5. Restart the computer.
