How to run Norton Disk Doctor

Run Norton Disk Doctor only from an undamaged disk. If you believe that the normal startup disk is damaged, boot from the Norton Utilities (NUM) or Norton SystemWorks (NSW-Mac) for Macintosh CD, the System CD or the Install CD that came with the computer. If you boot from a System CD, you must run Norton Disk Doctor from a secondary volume.

Run Norton Disk Doctor and repair damaged disks
Warning Warning If Norton Disk Doctor finds a major problem, ensure that important data is backed up before repairing the disk.

1
Open Norton Disk Doctor.
NOTE Note
Norton Disk Doctor can be accessed in several ways from your hard disk. In OS 8.1-9.x, click the Apple menu, then click Norton Utilities. In Mac OS X, open the Norton Solutions folder located in your Applications folder, and double-click Norton Utilities.
2
Select a disk to diagnose.
3
Click Examine. Norton Disk Doctor begins testing the disk, and shows when each test is complete.
NOTE Note
The Checking Media test takes a long time, and you may choose to skip this part of the examination. It is a good idea to test the media occasionally, but not necessary to do it every time. The Checking Media test is disabled by default in Norton Disk Doctor 8.0.x.
4
When Norton Disk Doctor finds a problem, it will stop its tests and report the error.
5
Click the Fix button to have Norton Disk Doctor repair the problem automatically.
In some cases, Norton Disk Doctor will display an informational dialog. After reading the recommendation, click Continue to resume testing.
6
Click View Reports, or Done, when Norton Disk Doctor completes the repairs.

If there were major errors that Disk Doctor repaired, it is a good idea to examine the disk again to be sure there are no more problems. When there are no problems found, quit Disk Doctor.

If Norton Disk Doctor detects damage that it cannot repair but that may be repaired by running Volume Recover, it will display a dialog that enables you to launch Volume Recover. Volume Recover can be used if Norton Utilities was installed prior to the development of the problem; it depends on information created by FileSaver when the drive is healthy. If you did not have FileSaver active, NUM 6.x, 7.x and 8.x has a Rebuild Directories feature that does not require FileSaver information. To learn more about the Rebuild Directories feature, please see the document How to use Volume Recover to rebuild directories or How to use Volume Recover 8.0.x to rebuild directories in Mac OS X.

If Volume Recover cannot recover the disk, you can use UnErase to locate recoverable files on your disk. To learn more about using UnErase, see the document How to UnErase files or How to UnErase files in Mac OS X.
