SYM07-028: Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh and Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh Local Elevation of Privilege vulnerability

Symantec is not aware of any customers impacted by this issue, or of any attempts to exploit the issue.

This vulnerability has been fixed in Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 11.0.

If you use Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 10.x/9.x or Norton Internet Security 3.0 for Macintosh, do one of the following to work around the problem:

Disable or set Mount Scanning to run without showing progress

Product Version Solution

Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 10.x/9.x Disable "Show Progress During Mount Scans" in the Mount Scan tab of Auto-Protect System preferences.

Norton Internet Security for Macintosh 3.x Disable "Show Progress During Mount Scans" in the Mount Scan tab of Auto-Protect System preferences.

Download and install the SymProtector kernel extension

Download the SymProtector kernel extension. DOWNLOAD NOW

Double-click the SymProtector.zip file that you downloaded.
The file is expanded.

Open the SymProtector folder.

Double click the SymProtector.pkg file.

Follow on screen instructions to complete.
