How to use FireWire target disk mode to run Norton Utilities from second computer
Situation:
You have two Macintosh computers with FireWire and Norton Utilities. You need to boot from the Norton Utilities CD to run Norton Disk Doctor, Speed Disk or Volume Recover, and you cannot boot from the Norton Utilities CD.
Solution:
If you have two computers with FireWire (preferably one is a laptop), then you can use FireWire target disk mode to run Norton Utilities from one computer to examine or repair the other.
FireWire target disk mode allows a Macintosh computer with a FireWire port to be used as an external hard disk when connected to another Macintosh.
What you need:
- Two Macintosh computers with FireWire
- FireWire cable
- Norton Utilities installed
- Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X
Notes:
- When you examine a PowerBook or iBook, plug in its AC adapter.
- Unplug all external FireWire devices from both computers.
- Do not plug in any FireWire devices until after you have disconnected the two computers from each other.
To use FireWire target disk mode
- Shut down the computer that you want to examine.
- Plug a FireWire cable into a FireWire port on each computer, connecting the two computers together.
- Start up the computer that you want to examine, and immediately press the T key until the FireWire icon appears.
Note: The hard disk of the computer that you want to examine will now be on the desktop, or in My Computer in Mac OS X on the other computer.
- Open Norton Utilities on the main computer.
- Run Norton Disk Doctor, Speed Disk, UnErase or Volume Recover.
- When you finish, drag the target computer to the Trash to unmount the drive.
- Press the power button to turn off the target computer.
- Unplug the FireWire cable.
