Black screen at startup when booting from a Symantec Macintosh product CD on a G4 Dual Processor 867 MHz and iMac G4 17 inch flat panel Macintosh

Situation:
You have a G4 dual processor 867 MHz or iMac G4 with 17 inch flat panel screen model Macintosh. When you start up from a Symantec Macintosh product CD, you see the Mac OS 9.2 splash screen and then the screen goes black. You may still see the outline of your mouse cursor.

Solution:
If you just purchased a brand new G4 dual processor 867 MHz or iMac G4 with 17 inch flat panel screen model Macintosh, then you will not be able to boot from the Norton Utilities 7.0.1 CD, Norton AntiVirus 8.0.1, Norton SystemWorks 2.0.1, or Norton Internet Security 2.0.1 CD.

If you have a Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security for Macintosh CD, you do not need to boot from the CD to use them. Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh can detect and repair viruses while installed on your hard drive. Because of this, it is not necessary nor required to boot from a NAVM or NIS Mac CD.

Norton Utilities requires that you boot from the CD to do the following:

You can install and use all your Symantec products without booting from the CD. After installing, please run LiveUpdate to ensure that you have the latest updates.

Disk replacements that boot these models are no longer available. Symantec released Norton Utilities 8.0 and Norton SystemWorks 3.0 in June 2003. These new versions include new Mac OS X bootable product CDs that boot these models. For more information about Norton Utilities 8.0, go to the Norton Utilities product page. For more information about Norton SystemWorks 3.0, go to the Norton SystemWorks product page.

Workarounds
When you cannot boot from the CD, you can:
If you have a CD-R or CD-RW drive, you can create your own bootable CD if you have a Mac OS 9.2.2 CD that will successfully boot your computer. Please see the document for the Mac OS that you are using:

How to create a bootable CD for a Symantec Macintosh product in Mac OS X
How to create a bootable CD for a Symantec Macintosh product in Mac OS 8.1 - 9.2.2

If you have a second Macintosh with FireWire, you can use FireWire target disk mode to examine the hard disk on your new Macintosh. Please see the document How to use FireWire target disk mode to run Norton Utilities from second computer.
