How to manually uninstall Norton Internet Security for Macintosh 2.0
Situation:
You want to manually remove Norton Internet Security 2.x from your Macintosh.
Solution:
The uninstaller for Norton Internet Security for Macintosh (NIS-Mac) 2.x will remove all of the program files specific to Norton Internet Security. However, some Symantec shared components are not removed by the uninstaller. To manually remove Norton Internet Security 2.x, boot from your Norton Internet Security CD, System Software CD or a separate volume. Once booted from the Norton Internet Security CD, System Software CD or from a separate volume, do the following:
NOTE: By following these steps, you will remove only Norton Internet Security files, and will not remove shared components of other installed Symantec software for Mac OS X.
- Double-click the drive to which Norton Internet Security is installed.
- Double-click Applications, then remove this file:
Norton Internet Security (alias)
- Double-click Norton Solutions, then remove these items:
Norton Internet Security (application)
Norton Personal Firewall (application)
Norton Privacy Control (application)
Norton AntiVirus (application)
- Double-click Read Me Files, then remove this file:
Norton Internet Security Read Me
- Close the Read Me Files, Norton Solutions, and Applications windows.
- Double-click Library, then Application Support, and then remove these items:
MindVision (folder)
NAV.history (file)
StuffIt Engine (file)
- Double-click Norton Solutions Support and remove these folders:
Norton Personal Firewall
Norton AntiVirus
- Double-click the Norton Application Aliases folder and remove these files:
Norton Internet Security (alias)
Norton Personal Firewall (alias)
Norton Privacy Control (alias)
Norton AntiVirus (alias)
- Close the Norton Applications Aliases, Norton Solutions Support, and Application Support windows.
- Remove the following folder:
CFMSupport
- Double-click Authenticators in the Library folder window, then remove this file:
SymAuthenticator.bundle
- Close the Authenticators window, then double-click Documentation.
- Double-click Help and remove the folder:
Norton AntiVirus Help
- Double-click Norton Help Scripts and remove these files:
NPClauncher
NISlauncher
NPFlauncher
NAVlauncher
- Close the Norton Help Scripts, Help and Documentation windows.
- Double-click Preferences, and remove these files:
com.symantec.NPF.plist
com.symantec.NPC.plist
- Close the Preferences window and remove this folder:
PrivateFrameworks
- Double-click StartupItems, and remove these folders:
NortonMissedTasks
NortonPersonalFirewall
NortonAutoProtect
NortonPrivacyControl
- Close the StartupItems and Library windows.
- Double-click System (the folder named "System", and not the folder named "System Folder"), then Library, then Extensions, and remove these files:
SymOSXKernelUtilities.kext
KTUM.kext
SymEvent.kext
- Close the Extensions, Library and System windows.
- Double-click Users, then the folder with the user name of the person who installed NAVM 8.x.
- Double-click Library, Preferences, then remove these files:
com.symantec.autoprotect.plist
com.symantec.NAV.plist
com.symantec.NIS.plist
com.symantec.NPF.plist
com.symantec.NPC.plist
- Close all open windows.
- Double-click the NIS-Mac 2.x CD, then Norton Internet Security.
NOTE: This step requires that the NIS-Mac 2.x CD is in the drive.
- Double-click Norton Internet Security, then click Norton AntiVirus to launch Norton AntiVirus.
- Click the File View tab, and check Show Invisible Files.
- Double-click the drive to which NIS-Mac 2.x is installed.
- Double-click the usr folder, then the bin folder.
- Click to highlight the file Navx.
- Click the Move To Trash button.
- Click OK when you see the message asking if you want to move this file to the trash.
- If you scanned your hard drive with NAVM, there will be an invisible NAV QuickScan file. Click to highlight the file, NAVMac800QSFile, and then click the Move To Trash button. Click OK when you see the message asking if you want to move this file to the trash.
NOTE: Do this for any NAV QuickScan files located on drives scanned by Norton AntiVirus. To learn more about the NAV QuickScan file, see the document The QuickScan file.
- Quit Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh.
- Empty the trash.
- Restart your computer.
Now Norton Internet Security 2.0 is removed from your system.
