How to configure protection settings for services in Norton Personal Firewall
Situation:
The Internet Services listed in the Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) Setup window of Norton Personal Firewall are set to deny all access by default. You can change protection settings for any Internet service listed in the NPF Setup window. You want to know how to configure protection settings for the Internet Services.
Solution:
You are able to configure protection for each separate Internet Service in Norton Personal Firewall. All Internet Services are set to "Deny all access" by default. There are many ways that you can configure each services protection level. For every service listed in the Setup window, you can:
NOTE: For information on how to restrict or allow access to the computer through certain ports or services, see the document How to configure new services in Norton Personal Firewall for Macintosh.
- Deny all access
- Allow access to addresses in the list
- Deny access to addresses in the list
- Allow all access
NOTE: These settings are listed in order from most restrictive to least restrictive.
To deny or allow all access to a service:
NOTE: In Norton Personal Firewall 3.0 you can configure Incoming and Outgoing access for each port.
- Open Norton Personal Firewall.
- Select the service for which you want to deny or allow all access.
- Select the desired option:
- Deny all access. This option will not allow anyone access to this service or port.
- Allow all access. This option allows everyone access to this service or port.
To allow or deny access to a list of IP addresses or a range of IP addresses:
NOTE: In Norton Personal Firewall 3.0, you can configure Incoming and Outgoing access for each port.
- Open Norton Personal Firewall.
- Select the service for which you want to deny or allow access.
- Select the desired option:
- Allow access to addresses in the list
- Deny access to addresses in the list
- Click New to add IP addresses to the list.
In Norton Personal Firewall 3.0
To add a single address:
- Select "a single address" from the pop-up menu.

- In the Address field, type the IP address or host name.
NOTE: For example, 66.79.10.214 and symantec.com identify the same computer.
- Click Save. The address appears in the list in the Setup window.
To add a range of addresses:
- Select "addresses starting with" from the pop-up menu.

- In the Base IP address field, type enough of an address to get the range of addresses that you want.
NOTE: As you enter each digit of a Base IP address, NPF determines the end of the range and displays it in the Address range area of the New Address window.
- Click Save. The range of addresses appear in the list in the Setup window.
To add all computers on a network:
- Select "all computers on a network: from the pop-up menu.

- To allow computers on your local network click the Use My Subnet button. The Base and Mask address fields are filled in automatically.
- Click Save. The address range appears in the list in the Setup window.
In Norton Personal Firewall 2.0
To add a single address:
- Select "A single address" from the pop-up menu.

- In the Address field, type the IP address or host name.
NOTE: For example, 206.204.52.5 and symantec.com identify the same computer.
- Click Save. The address appears in the list in the Setup window.
To add a range of addresses:
- Select "Addresses starting with" from the pop-up menu.

- In the Base IP address field, type enough of an address to get the range of addresses that you want.
NOTE: As you enter each digit of a Base IP address, NPF determines the end of the range and displays it in the Addresses range area of the New Address window.
- Click Save.
In Mac OS 8.1 - 9.x
To add a single address:
- Click Single IP address in the New Address window.
- In the IP address field, type the IP address.
- Click OK.
To add a range of addresses:
- Click "IP addresses starting with."
- In the Base IP address field, type enough of an address to get the desired range of addresses.
NOTE: As you enter each digit of a Base IP address, NPF determines the end of the range and displays it in the IP address range area of the New Address window.
- Click OK.
