How to manually uninstall Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.0

The uninstaller for Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.x removes most of the program files. However, Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect and some Symantec shared components are not removed by the uninstaller. To uninstall Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect, an uninstaller is located on the Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.x CD in the Install for OS X folder. NOTE Note

By following these steps, you will remove only Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh files, including Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect. Shared components of other installed Symantec software for Mac OS X are not removed.

  

STEP 1

Because you must return to this page after you restart the computer, add this page to Favorites.

 

STEP 2
  Boot from the Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.x CD or a volume with OS 9.x
To completely remove Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.x, including Norton AntiVirus AutoProtect from your Macintosh, boot from the Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.x CD or a volume with OS 9.x.

 

STEP 3
  Uninstall Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.0

Double-click the drive on which Norton AntiVirus is installed.

Double-click Applications, and then remove the Norton AntiVirus (alias) file.

Double-click Norton Solutions, and then remove the Norton AntiVirus (application) file.

Double-click Read Me Files, and then remove the Norton AntiVirus Read Me file.

Close the Read Me Files, Norton Solutions, and Applications windows.

Double-click Library, then Application Support, and remove the following items: 
 
  • MindVision (folder)
  • NAV.history (file)
  • StuffIt Engine (file)

Double-click Norton Solutions Support, and remove th Norton AntiVirus folder.

Double-click the Norton Application Aliases folder, and remove the Norton AntiVirus (alias) file.

Close the Norton Application Aliases, Norton Solutions Support, and Application Support windows.

In the Library folder window, double-click Authenticators, and then remove the SymAuthenticator.bundle file.

Close the Authenticators window, and then double-click Documentation.

Double-click Help, and then remove the Norton AntiVirus Help folder.

Double-click Norton Help Scripts and remove the NAVlauncher file.

Close the Norton Help Scripts, Help, and Documentation windows.

Double-click StartupItems, then remove the NortonAutoProtect folder.

Close the StartupItems and Library windows.

Double-click System (the folder named "System", and not the folder named "System Folder"), double-click Library, and then double-click Extensions.

Remove the following files: 
 
  • KTUM.kext
  • SymEvent.kext
  • SymOSXKernelUtilities.kext

Close the Extensions, Library, and System windows.

Double-click Users, and then double-click the folder with the user name of the person who installed Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.x.

Double-click Library, double-click Preferences, and then remove the following files: 
 
  • com.symantec.autoprotect.plist
  • com.symantec.NAV.plist

Close all windows.

Double-click the Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.x CD, and then double-click Norton AntiVirus.
NOTE Note The Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.x CD must be in the drive.

On the File View tab, check Show Invisible Files.

Double-click the drive on which Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 8.x is installed.

Double-click the usr folder, and then souble-click the bin folder.

Click the Navx file to select it.

Click Move To Trash.
 When you see the confirmation message, click OK.

If you scanned your hard drive with Norton AntiVirus, there will be an invisible NAV QuickScan file. Click the NAVMac800QSFile file to select it, and then click Move To Trash.
 When you see the confirmation message, click OK.
NOTE Note Repeat this step for any NAV QuickScan files that are located on drives scanned by Norton AntiVirus. To learn more about the NAV QuickScan file, read The QuickScan file.

Quit Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh.

Empty the trash.

Restart the computer.
 Norton AntiVirus is now completely removed. Shared components of Norton software remain on the computer.
