How to configure new services in Norton Personal Firewall for Macintosh
Situation:
You are using Norton Personal Firewall for Macintosh (NPF). You want to customize the application to restrict or allow access to the computer through certain ports or services.
Solution:
You allow or restrict access to specific ports by creating new services. To do this, you must enable this feature in NPF.
To create a new service in Norton Personal Firewall 3.0 in Mac OS X:
- Click the Go menu, then Applications.
- Open Norton Solutions, then Norton Personal Firewall.
- Click New, under the "Protect these Internet services:" window.
- The New Service window appears.

- Select a service name from the provided list. If the service you want to add does not appear in the list, type it in the Name field. If you select a service from the list, the port number appears automatically.
- Type a description of the service in the Description field. This is optional.
- If you typed a service name, click New to enter a port number.

- Type in a single port number, or select Range of ports, and type a beginning and ending port number for the range.
- Click Save.
- Click the Logging tab to set up logging for this port.

- Select the settings you want for logging access attempts to this port.
- Click the Notifications tab to set up notifications for this port.

- Select the settings you want for Notifications for this port.
- Click Save when you have completed adding the options for this new service.
- The new service appears in the Setup window. You can select this new service and modify it to allow all access to the port, or restrict access to the port as with any of the other predefined services. To create a new service in Norton Personal Firewall 2.0 in Mac OS X:
- Click the Go menu, then Applications.
- Open Norton Solutions, then Norton Personal Firewall.
- Click New, under the "Protect these Internet services:" window.
- The New Service window appears.

- Select a service name. If the service you want to add does not appear in the list provided, type it in the Service name field. If you select a service from the list, the port number appears automatically.
- If you typed a service name, type the port number for the service in the Service Port field.
NOTE: You can change the icon by copying and pasting or dragging and dropping the desired icon over the icon in the New Service window. For example, you can copy and paste an icon from the About box for a file or application.
- Click Save.
- The new service appears in the Setup window. You can select this new service and modify it to allow all access to the port, or restrict access to the port as with any of the other predefined services. To create a new service in Norton Personal Firewall in Mac OS 8.1 - 9.2
- Launch Norton Personal Firewall.
- Click the Edit menu, and click "Preferences."
- In the Preferences window, check "Enable more control over services."

- Click Save.
- Click the "New" button in the lower left hand side of the NPF window.
- The New Service window appears. You can enter a port number for a specific service, or select from a list of predefined services. Select a service from the pop-up or enter your own port number, and enter a description for the port in the Service Name field.

- Click OK.
- In the NPF window, you can select this new service and modify it to allow all access to the port, or restrict access to the port as with any of the other predefined services.
